    Posted: 31 Oct 2015 at 6:47pm
Does anyone know of a good simple way to set the ignition timing on my D10-3. I am going to put on a new distributor cap, wires, plugs and I will need to get the timing correct when putting everything back together.

It is a 66 D10 Series with 149 cubic inches. I am smart enough to find TDC in the viewing window which should be found during the upstroke of the compression stroke on cylinder 1 but....

What cylinder is #1 in the front of the tractor or the one nearest the driver?

Which way does the engine run; clockwise or counter-clockwise as you sit on the seat?

Can anyone offer me a good explanation or maybe a good illustration of how to get it done?

Thanks

#1 is toward the front.

Look at the fan, it draws air through the radiator.

Google using a dwell meter to set timing...

If you only change cap wires and plugs you won't change your timing settings anyway. Engine turns ccw as u r sitting on the seat.

Be absolutely sure to mark the LOCATION of the distributer before you try and change the timing, so you know where it was before. Stick the points/condensor in it first. A timing light is the correct way to set timing, not by ear.

Thanks for the responses guys. I did mark the distributor and labeled all the wires and all that jazz but I know I will be cranking that engine a little during restoration and I know the distributor gear will get rotated during restoration so I will have to have a place to start. I have a timing light and I know how to use it but I am concerned about getting everything close enough to get it running before fine tuning with the light. I am not finding any good information on how to do that. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

If you aren't actually removing the distributer from the engine during restoration, remove the dist cap with the wires still in it. Nothing then will ever change if you turn the engine over. The dist cap can only go on one way, as do the wires.

Rotation and cyl no are from front of engine ,all other things are from the driver seat.
