Just curious, what Chassis would be better for building a puller out of. Farm stock, up to maybe cheater farm, or light limited. Start out in farm, and work my way up. I would like to start with something out of a salvage yard. 190/200/7000 maroon belly, or 180/185 with 38's maybe bull gears turned back? Just wondering what peoples opinions are?

Go with 190 or 200. As you grow you will need 4 spider. MACK

As I luv the 180,s ,,, but your better off with a 190 series 3 tractor, or a 200,set up correctly you can put all kinds of power into it and never worry about tearing it up

A local guy has a 180 that I call cheater farm. He farms with it but it has a 190 turbo system on it. 38's on the rear Pulls real well 7 to 9000 lb classes

Any reason to stay away from 7000 maroon belly? maybe a little heavier, but so much more room under the hood. It also has the three speed until I get too hot for the power director to handle it, plus no neutral. opinions?

If your aspirations are to someday run LLSS I would seriously consider using a 7000 exactly for the reasons you described. Most LLSS class weights are around 6500 lbs. give or take a little. A 7000 can make that weight and still balance well on most tracks I would think. The four pinion diff is already there, the axles and final drives are more rugged than an earlier 190 or 180 - 185 and yes tons of room beneath the hood. If I were ever to build another 301 tractor it would be a maroon 7000. The biggest issue will be finding tranny gears as the 7000 transmission gears are different than the 180 - 190. I would think the right custom gear manufacturer could whip up a custom ratio set if they had OEM patterns to work from.
As for your farm classes the power shift will hold until you get past 250 HP I would guess - not sure. Be sure you keep the RPM at or below 3,000 if you are going to use it and your cast iron flywheel.

Thinking about it more,, I'd go for the 7000 too, I'm liking the 7000 series looks a lot more, just don't quite get the Power shift deal,, I kno it's got 4 more speeds than a 200 Allis , and prolly could handle 350 hp. out of a 301 is easy,,and Could be done. but can it be made to handle major horsepower ????I'm talking 1000 hp

The "Power Shift" in a model 7000 cannot be made to handle 1,000 HP.

7000 only has a three speed power shift. but there is no neutral, so it may be better for higher hp maybe 250-300hp? the problem with 180/190 power directors is they stall when you shift through neutral correct?

My 7000 works great , could stand little more gear. As far as the power shift, don't think I'd want that to explode between my legs!!

Just got my hot farm together this year. Has 7000 series metal on it. Loads more room underneath compared to the d21 or 210 metal. Actually seems like more room than the 8000 series metal that's on the altered farm.
