Hey guys, I've got a couple of issues with my 653. It's a pedal steer and I do not know if the problems are related. The left pedal does nothing when depressed, it goes down and nothing happens. I believe it might need new new brake linings? The right steering pedal will turn the machine but reluctantly. Also when I use the shuttle sometimes it won't move. If I go from forward to reverse, it often will not respond. If I continue forward using several attempts, it might then go backward. It pushes like a demon, but when going up and down inclines it slows dramatically and won't even move in 2nd or 3rd gears on a slope. All the fluids are up to par. Was gonna test the shuttle pressure, what do you think? Thanks.

Dozing in 2 nd or 3 rd ? if pushing use 1st unless your in a hurry for some reason .
Sounds like more than brake band problem - then if bands are oil soaked - they will not turn good . It sounds like the need to check pressures and to also make sure your valve body is working properly - I had broken spring on the reverse side in valve body - machine quit in that direction as everything did not line up to send oil to right ports for clutch pack . Check those springs to make sure both are same length and strength. |

No, not dozing in 2nd or 3rd, just seeing if it would move in those gears or even try to move while on an incline. The road goes through a slight dip.

DID YOU TIGHTEN THE BRAKE BANDS ? TAKE TOP COVER OFF THE FINAL DRIVES AND LOOK TO SEE IF INSIDE IS COATED WITH OIL.

I have not yet tried to tighten them, but will pull the covers ans inspect/ tighten them. Any thoughts on how to determine if the problem is the clutches or just the brake bands other than trial and error? Also my shuttle is acting up a bit.

IF THERE IS NO MORE ADJUSTMENT ON THE THREADED ROD FOR BRAKE BANDS THEN THEY ARE WORN OUT AND MUST BE REPLACED. I DO NOT THINK PUSHING DIRT IN 2 nd OR 3 rd GEAR IS GOOD FOR THE MACHINE. THOSE TWO GEARS ARE REALLY DESIGNED FOR TRAMMING ONLY IN MY OPINION. I BELIEVE THE REAL PROBLEM LIES IN ADJUSTMENT AND INSPECTION FOR OIL ON BRAKE BANDS.

Guys, let me clear this up. I am not pushing dirt or working the machine in 2nd or 3rd. Simply stating that on an incline it slows to a stop in those gears, but on a level surface when the shuttle is working, it will move ok. In 1st gear it will push more than adequately.

COKE IS RIGHT ON A CHECK OF PRESSURE. THEN GO FROM THERE. I STILL THINK AN INSPECTION OF FINAL DRIVE INSIDE OF CASE IS IN ORDER AND NOT TOO MUCH TROUBLE TO REMOVE THE COVERS.

I have a 653 also............almost the same problem...........only I am leaking dexron torque housing fluid though. I was curious as to what you found out with your troubleshooting. Mine smokes also because of running sooooo rich and I have to find a way to lean out the fuel to the engine. I think my injectors have stacked washers under them when I installed them. I don't know much about diesel engines, but I am learning.

Does the 653 dozer with the 433 engine have an injector pump that is adjustable. It seems to be running really rich. If I push the fuel shutoff knob in to bring the idle down then it leans out and runs better without all the smoke. I am at a stand still with the dozer until I can get more information. Thanks.
