Does anyone know how to change the reel speed on one of these machines? Trying to cut some heavy clover and the cutterbar keeps getting plugged up. I believe the reel isn't pulling the hay of the cutterbar fast enough. Don't have a manual.

Not sure on that model but the 488 has set of shims that change the width and therefor the effective diameter of the smaller drive pulley on the belt. I be looking for something like that. I know it is a whole nother machine from a 488. rw

Before you start messing with the speed, make sure the springs on the back are tensioned enough so the front cutterbar does not drag (I assume it is similar to a NH combine that we have). Tighten them so you can lift each side with just a bit of effort (say 50 lbs lift each side). If it drags because the springs are not tensioned enough, , it will make the combine not follow straight into the grass and digs into the ground. Also, make sure your knives are sharp and close to the cutterbar. And dry grass is easier to cut than wet grass.

And make sure the shoes are lowered enough (raises the cutterbar so you leave a bit more grass) so you are not hitting every mouse nest or whatever and causes your plugging.

We bought our practically brand new haybine from a dealer that said the customer traded it in because he said it always plugged up. The front weighted a ton. We tightened the springs up and hardly ever plug up.
