Hi...first post... Recently bought 1949 Allis Chalmers b. Already own a 1941 Allis Chalmers b in pieces that I inherited. Want to take the wheels off the '41 and put onto the '49. The '41 has 5 lug nuts around large wheel nut, the '49 does not. How do I swap them...Was told by dealer not to remove large wheel nut or I will mess up bearings. I am trying to restore father's old tractor and could use help...

I am assuming you are talking about the rear wheels? I do not think it is possible to swap these 2 out unless you change the entire axle. That would be more work then finding someone with a parts tractor and taking the wheels off that. There should be no problem with removing the large axle nut on the rear wheels. Plenty of us have done it and not had problems. Of course just make sure it is tight when you put it back on. Or are you talking about the front wheels?

your dealer dont know squat. the 1-1/2 inch nut that holds the hub onto the axle has nothing to do with the bearing. That being said, morton is right, the two axles are different. You can take the entire final drive case off the trans/ differential housing and bolt the other final drive case onto the differential, or you can take the axle stub out of the final drive and swap--- not an easy job for you. They use to make an adaptor that went over the splines and then you could bolt the 5 stud hub to it, but i doubt you will find a set of those. why do you want to change ???????? there might be a better way.

The 41 has a matched set of tires...a little weather checked but o.k. The '49 that I just purchased has one new tire and one old of different size. tractor sits a little lopsided and I want to use with belly mower. I didn't want to invest in another new tire until I was a little more sure of the purchase.

Agreed, your dealer knows squat about this Allis.
If both have the large nut, you can swap. If not, burther out, on the cast section, there are 4 locking pirces holding the center cast section tot he outer stamped steel piece, You can seperate there, and swap too.

Everything the B Guys have told you is good information. If it is just to get a matching set of tires on the 49 using those on the 41 go with JimDs method and just swap rims and tires. This is presuming that both the 41 and the 49 have the same style rims and locking blocks and bolts.
If the 41 has the 5 bolt splined adapter hubs held on to the splined axle by the big center nut and uses the nearly flat reversable 5 bolt wheel centers it more than likely has a tall adjustable front axle also. Unfortunatly these adapter hubs are prone to work themselves loose and the splines in the hub and on the axle get sloppy and will not make up snug. The easy way to check to see if they are ok is to grab the top of the tire and shake the tractor side to side. If they are a sloppy fit behind the big nut start looking for other final drives with good splines. There is no easy fix for worn out splines. Good luck finding 5 bolt adapters with good splines. There may have been lots of them at one time but they are few and far between these days. You seldom see the 5 bolt adapter hubs on Bs at shows.

Thanks for all the help...I will probably try and split at the rims to save time(its mowing season). I also have an impact and socket to fit the lugs...where would you find a 1' 1/2" wheel nut socket? My father machined one, but I can't find it. Thanks again for the help..I will try to upload a pic of the wheels.

rims bolt to the hub with 4 bolts and ecentnrics... not hard to change them out if all you want is tires and rims... the center nut on the hub is normally a two flat nut, and you can use a wrench you have cut out, a pipe wrench, or a 36 inch cresent type wrench. I got a $50 cresent type wrench from Harbor Freight i use just for those nuts. If it has been changed to a hex nut, you just need a big socket.. or the pipe wrench or cresent.

How do I take off my rear tire from the B, the center nut and how do I replace my rear bearings. I am assuming that is the knocking noise that I am hearing.

Bearing are internal.. You have to disassemble, pull the shafts out and replace the bearings, then reinstall the shaft and set the bearing preload....
The rim bolts to the cast HUB with 4 ecentric bolts.. If you take them off, the tire and rim will fall off. You need a jack under the drawbar area to support the tractor.. The BIG NUT on the center shaft can be removed with a BIG WRENCH and the hub taken off.. If may come off with a couple whacks from a 10 pound hammer... or it may be pretty TIGHT and take more effort.

Rick, after saying all that, it is NOT common to have bearing problems that make noise... but it is possible..
Routinely if you have NOISE, the HUB NUT is not tight , the HUB is wobbling on the shaft, or the 4 rim bolts are not tight. .. Stand at the side of the tire and PUSH the top of the tire back and forth toward the seat.. Can you feel a lot of LOOSENESS ?? See if the big cast HUB is wobbling on the center axle shaft.
