I'm at an auction right now where there are several 8000 series and somebody looking at one of them claimed that it's got the same transmission (20 sp PD) as the Steiger.
He then went on to say that Steiger made all the large articulated for Allis like the 4w-305. I believe the 440 was a Steiger, but as far as I know the newer ones were engineered and built by AC. Or is there some possibility that Steiger assemble them for AC? |

Yup. Steiger made only the 440 for allis, it is 100% steiger with orange paint and a cummins engine. However, if you run accross a steiger with bar axles, the axles and transmission are supplied to steiger by allis for those units. Darrel

AC supplied Steiger with some driveline components. Hopefully someone with better knowledge will reply.

The 20 speeds in nearly every steiger is a spicer 10 speed box, same as the semi trucks use, early model steigers used these for 10 gears and the later ones got 20 by having a 2 speed drop box to get 20, powershift steigers were allison transmissions

Steiger wanted a couple models with bar axles and integrated pto's, this is where A-C came in and supplied the components. The ones that I've seen had an L10 Cummins engine. Can't remember about the dropboxes, but thinking they would've been A-C also. COUGAR 1280 is one model that comes to my mind. , Mike

Short story. Two young engineers worked together at White Farm on the 4-150, and got to be friends and rode some motorcycle together. One went to Steiger and one (me) went to Allis in the mid 70's. We stayed in touch. Steiger saw the need for some tractors with adjustable wheel tread and live PTO. I got a call. Allis had the transmission and drop boxes (2 needed) to do that. Allis was also hungry for business, so we also took the 8000 final drive and made it into a "package" unit. End of story. |

1985 CR and KR Cougar 1225 and 1280's were
the only two models. It was a one year wonder. What is most interesting is that is this is the same time period that Deutz owned a stake in Steiger after purchasing the IH shares a couple yrs prior. |

Interesting. I can't say enough, how much I enjoy reading about the rich AC history.
427435 - Thanks for sharing your incredible short story. I have 2 questions; 1. what are bar axles? 2. What were the hp ratings for these Steiiger/AC models? |

Bar axles are the normal round axle shafts most tractors use as opposed to outboard planetary axles. Horsepower was 225 and 280. Like I said before the smaller 1000 series 1225 and 1280 models.

AC7060, Bar axles are an acronym for adjustable axles. Up until that time Steigers had outboard planetary (non-adjustable)axles. 225 & 280 were the hp ratings. Also on a side not these particular models have turned into orphan's, with a lot of the A-C parts NLA. In contrast to the earlier & later models that used truck components, Allison trans. etc., Mike
