Anyone know what charge should be for 134a? Tractor was converted by previous owner, but the air never worked for me. A buddy came over last night and we got it going. There was still some pressure in the system, so it hadn't leaked all the way down, but he thought it was quite low. There was a bad circuit breaker, which is temporarily jumped out, and we put some charge in, to where he said "where a car would be", and it is making cold. So I guess the question is, rather than the weight of a total charge (though that would be good to know too) what should our pressures be reading?

If I remember right pressure on the low side should be 20-30 and the high side on like a 85 degree day should be 275-300. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong and I could be. But this should put you towards the right direction.

between 20-30 on the low and add outside timp plus 134 for the high. Example 85 degrees outside temp plus 134 is 219 on the high. Doesn't have to be exact but close,210-230.

Sounds like we got it a little too full? We ended up with 35-40ish, and 285. It was really hot yesterday. By wekracer's rule, should have been around 230. No big deal? Obviously, it leaks a little anyway. . .
btw, that's not where R134 gets its name, is it?

r134a capacity is 80 percent of an r12 charge On the deeres they were usually 4 lbs and JD said to put in 3.6 lbs and they worked good Gary

Never really did get this working good. Cools for ~ 10 minute...kinda...then just warms up. Buddy going to come back over sometime soon.
Does anyone have a schematic for the air conditioning on a 7045 or know where I can get one? Google searches pretty much direct me back here so far...

system is Frigidaire and simple, compressor, to condenser to drier to expansion valve to evaporator to compressor. Make sure heater is shut off. Set fan on high and shoot for 225 on a 90 degree day high side and you should see about 20 on the low side with cab door open and fan on high. Shut the door and turn fan on low and the low side should go down to about 10 or 12 if the valve is working. Keep in mind a little moisture in the system will delute performance. Ours, when working with everything clean will actually frost at times on the low pressure at the compressor. Again cores must be clean, drier fresh, good vacuum pulled etc to perform. All systems had a high temp switch on the line in front of the radiator - some had a super heat switch in the compressor - most have been changed.

tbran, Buddy thinks it is an electrical problem, he knows all the pressures and such, he is a licensed air conditioning tech. He was asking me to find a schematic if I could, to see how the compressor gets switched in and so forth.

Electricaly power goes from fan switch too thermostat too psi switch in cab too high psi switch by radiator too compressor. Note I didn't start working on these units until the early 90s some have psi switch in cab under the top some don't .I don't know how they were originally. I have had to take top off and clean coils so the thermostat wouldn't shut them off due too lack of airflow

X2 Had the same problem on our 7060, installed a ball valve in the heater hose, I bet it will solve your problem.

So....nobody has a schematic, huh!  No, seriously, thanks for the suggestions. I've printed a couple of these off for my buddy, and I'll put a ball valve in. Did you guys cut the hose and put one in or hard plumb it on one end? Mr. 7040, you said "take the top off and clean coils." Take the top off what, the cab?

Yes. Take the top off the cab and blow out the condenser. I will bet its got a lot of dirt in it. It's a good idea to do that every year or two.

A bolt on each corner looks like it takes the top off? Do these bolts thread in to something, or do you have to take something apart on the inside to hold on to a nut?
Friggin' hinge broke on the door, running it through the field with the door propped open. It's been welded before. Grrr.....

They are threaded into a nut that is held in place with a clip. As long as the clip doesn't break you just unscrew the bolts. If one breaks you'll probably have to cut off the bolt head.
