I have a D17 that am wanting to build up. I had been using it for farming as my main work horse. Have another tractor now that does what I need it to do on the farm. Am wanting to build the D17 to get the most power. When growing up we pulled a cpl of AC and Farmalls. Any help would be appreciated thank you. Oh I know some of you wont want to put stuff on an open forum, so if you want you can email me... lol

I guess a stated goal would help.
What class are you aiming to go for?

Are you just wanting to work with what you've got, or build a new motor? You could just start with a bigger carburetor and 170 governor spring. Also a high performance coil and a Petronius system will gain you a couple horse power.

4500 up to 6500??? So, what will your competition be?? Right off the bat at 4500 pounds you will be potentially be competing with 550 cube Oliver's and M- Farmall's.

Right now engine is out and apart. As far as the Olivers am not to worried about them unless they have come a long way . Am wanting to mainly be competitive. And know in the 5000 and up will be against the 460s

For example, in the 4500 class, what gear are the 460's running and what size rear tires???

I don't want to discourage you because it is your tractor and everybody should have fun how they want, but an allis open speed that heavy will just be hard. Dad and I have a 451ci Farmall M that we occassionally run open speed with, and we are still back of the pack at 160hp.

Which this was 25 and 30 yrs go, we were pulling a d17 in the 5500 and was able to get the m and 460s because to much power and not enough weight and still see it here at times. the 460 we had we pulled in the 6500 upto 9500. which in the 9500 we were pulling against 966 and up and again was the weight power ratio. am not looking to get rich just a hobby

Well i'm talking about our open club has no rpm limit 2. Lol we are swinging a 7.5 inch crank, so we can only turn about 2000rpm. The guys beating us are cranking 4500 to 5500 easy still with 400+ cubes. So don't worry what i'm talking about if your club is limited on rpm

most of the 460s are running the 301 out of 806s. Around here they have a 30% over stock rpm, which with a 17 is about 2600. They have the antique classic 4mph open gear 8 and open gear 12. I was looking at the open gear 8 or 12. The 460 we had growing up had the 301, the engine was built and blue printed, we started out at 2000 out of the hole and taking it to 4000. The guy that dad got the tractor from said no, come out of the hole at 3000 and take it to 6500. She would stand up drop down and after that we never took worse than third. The only problem that we had with the 460 was burning a hole in the head gasket between 1 and 2.
