Whats the deal with grinding cranks on the 301 diesel ? Seems that if they have been ground they break ? Is there a correct process to follow to help them not break ?

Don't know about 301's but 426's were picky that way.My shop manual has VERY specific remarks/instructions about journal radius when reground.I think most breaks were from too small a radius in the fillet.

The deal is this, if you don't know how to grind a H.D. diesel crankshaft, it will probably break sometime down the road. If your crankshaft grinderman (or woman) only grinds automotive cranks, he (or she) is probably ignorant as to how vitally important the radius of each journal is. It has to be dressed correctly. It cannot be ground to a square corner like many car cranks. Leaving the radius as "fat" as possible is very important. Also, if any journal has had a bearing burnout and blued the journal at all, the crankshafts hardness has been compromised and will surely break down the road, even tho it may have magnafluxed just fine. I have an old friend who was a dealer many years ago and had trouble with broken 301 cranks. I lived 60 miles away and never had a broken crank. We had different Machine Shops and that was the difference.
