I thought I would share a few pictures of the family WC that my father restored a couple of years ago.
The story goes that this WC was purchased used by my grandfather. He died in 1958 and the tractor was sold at his farm sale. A neighbor and class mate of my father bought it and used it for many years then eventually parked it on the barn. about 10 years ago my father and the class mate were talking at a class reunion and my father learned where the tractor went to and they agreed to sell it. It was a few years later my father went to get it and learned his classmate had passed away, but the widow still had the tractor.
My father picked up the tractor which was in poor shape and spent 3+ years restoring it back to the origonal condition it was first in. It is now part of the family and will be passed to me and then to my son.
Here are a few of pictures:

Amazing! That is one sharp tractor. I think it's a great tribute to your family & your hard work.

Nice job. I wish I could have found my great grandfather's John Deere B. Keeping it in the family is priceless. I like the foot brakes too.

I conditioned and raked a lot of hay when I was younger (10-12 years old )with a 48 WC.Were the foot brakes aftermarket or were they a factory option.I have only seen hand brakes.I always liked how you could steer with the hand brakes. Its great your family has the one your grandfather owned.Wish I could find ours.

The foot brakes were an aftermarket add on. My grandmother told my grandfather to put them on the tractor so the "boys" would be better able to stop the tractor.

Beautiful WC!!! You know, I visited Fred Wilke's one time to see his outstanding collection of WCs for every year made with two for 1938 when they went from unstyled to styled. Fred asked if I would sit on his father's WC tractor. That was the one my father sold his father in 1946. Fred said he "plowed to California" on that unit. The footbrake set up appears to be the one we used on several WC's we sold. Beautiful job on that special WC. I can be certain they did not look that good new. Congratulations! Good Luck! Bill Long |

Nice Tractor! BTW, your shop is much too clean and organized. LOL

Why is there never time to do it right the first time, but always time to go back and fix it?

The shop is my fathers and it is usually kept in order. It was not always that way when I was a teenager. I believe the retirement days have afforded him some extra time for organization :)

Heisler? manifold or wuakesha. Distributer from probably somebody like Central Tractor or tractor supply, that adapted to mag mount, And foot brakes from same type of sources.
You must have a thermostat on the tractor since I can see a thermostat housing and no shutters behind the grill or adjuster crank on side.
Tractor sure is beautifully restored.
I too like your rear platform, better than just an old plank bolted across. |
