Alright so i have a 1961 allis chalmers d15 nfe and it has play in the steering. When we had the motor out we removedthe shims where the steering shaft(from the steering wheel) goes into the steering housing in hopes of removing some of the play. Well it did help a lot, but it still has about 1/4 of a round of play an it will shimy going down the road. I believe it is in the steering worm bearing and the other bearing on that shaft not the part that goes down to the wheels because there seems to be no play in that and when it shimys i can hold the wheel all te way to either side of the play and it wont shimy. My question is where can i get those bearings? I know i can get the steering worm bearing for it from steiner but thats the only bearing that i can find for it and i know there is two in there because i an see it on my book. The steiner site also shows that i only nee one of the steering worm bearings per tractor. Do yall think the bearings are wore or something else
Thanks, Luke

You have to be careful on some of this stuff. Some bearings were made by Timken specifically for AC. When this happens the bearing is usually captive, meaning it must be bought through the dealer. I ran into this on the D14 I did many years ago.

Now this is not to say a good bearing house won't have a bearing that can be made to work with slight modification......

Check the 2 universal joints in the steering linkage - If these are worn, they can contribute to play in the system.  AGCO carries the bearings that you need.  Check your tie rods while you are at it too - another source for play.

There is a splined coupler that connects the lower pedestal with the shaft out of the bottom of the steering gear. On my D14 the splines were worn and that is where my play was.

My crystall ball says the bearings are fine.  Get the front of the tractor off the ground.  You can usually find where the slop is easily at that point.

What did you do about the splines being worn? I believe the bearings are worn because when we took them out they had the tendency to come apart, not stay together like a bearing should. Also, I'll check but I don't believe there is any play where the two shafts connect. How would I tell if I jacked up the front end? Never thought of doing that but not sure what I would check?
Thanks, Luke

With the front wheels off the ground, I'd remove the oil fill tube behind the grille and look inside. You might have to drain down the oil level to see the steering gear. Watch the gear and turn the front wheels back and forth just enough to not move the gear inside. I'm thinking worn splines on the pedestal coupler and gearbox output shaft.
