Anybody know about this tractor? I see they mounted a second set of final drives for the front axle but how would you steer?

Either the front axle pivots, or you skid steer. The Power Horse was based on a B but turning took away too much power from forward motion as the outside wheel would speed up when stopping the inside wheel.

Just thinkin out loud.....would be fun to make one and use it to skid logs from out back up to the yard. But then again...might be a little weak on the engine to skid if its turnin 4 wheels.

does it really have another set of final drives ? You need the bevel gear housing to drive the finals. That would be quite a bunch of mass under the engine oil pan... I don't see that. I would guess it has a front axle from a 4 wheel unit and that would include steering ??
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Google powermaster or H, this unit was made for a couple years.  The original concept was a tractor that you could use to pull horse drawn equipment, it had control reins that you used, from the seat of the implement.  It's main drawback was weakness in power in the turns...

Where did you take the picture?  I'm sure this tractor is in the George Nesbitt collection here in Ontario. He bought it this past summer. I have more detailed pictures on another computer. It is supposed to be the prototype 'H' but I have my reservations.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Since it has no steering wheel my guess would be skid steer. Seeing the C drawbar out the front to hold the front of the engine it more than likely has a C final drive set in backwards and powered from the power take off using gears and roller chain. Looks like a CA torque tube. Of course anyone can guess anything and be totally wrong. Be fun to see up close.

Home built tractor not the allis model h
It drives off the pto

It is neat and I respect the work the person put in. But it is not an allis chalmers prototype.

Terry you are correct. The front drives from the PTO and the 'C' rear in the front is driven through the PTO. It is a skid steer but by braking not clutching. I didn't think it could have been the 'H' prototype either. It is not built as the prototype was discribed in Norm Swinford's book.

20G !

Wow ! for 1/4 of that you can have both my Bees and the C and make your own !
As much as I'd love to build one my 'job jar' is overflowing, my 'todo' list is 3 pages long and my hernias and back getting too old to haul big heavy things this week !

Sure would be a nice project though......

It does have a serial number 24xxx on the main tractor. On the front, the axles and final drives are rotated 90 degrees forward and the drive is in through the PTO end. I did not check the front transmission for a serial number. I'm not familiar enough with a 'G' but I know the the engine is on the PTO end of the transmission so I don't what internal changes would have to be made to have this tractor drive both axles in all the gears.

For the B & C there's a shaft that is driven from the front of the transmission, that goes through the transmission to drive the PTO. The G uses that shaft to drive the tranmission.

Wonder what happens when you put the driving transmission in reverse ?

The PTO doesn't change direction, so front wheels would still be driving forward !!

I guess just shift PTO out of gear.

Might have the spider gears welded up to lock up both axles...

If the axles were locked together, how would you turn by braking ??

Wonder if you could do this with CA axles/housings on both sides so you have the clutched axles and would actually have steering clutches? Not sure if you could spin the CA axle housing around and use it on the left side too? Then you would also have to weld the diff so it would keep going when a side was disconnected. That would be such a cool project. Useful; probably not, but would be cool.

Ca's can have a hand clutch on the left side. If you weld the differential, you couldn't steer it. Just adding a hand clutch on the left and keeping the right side clutch would allow either wheel to be powered or both.

fellow in southern Iowa had 2 wd45's hooked together, pivoted in the center like most bigger 4x4's do. I think I've seen them before. That one looks like it would not turn very short before the tires came together

I have toyed with building a 4 wd out of a d15. Either adding a front assist or building an articulated setup. My train of thought was to get a stronger front end which would make a better loader tractor. I always thought the 4 wd tractors with the same wheels front and rear look unstoppable to me. I never got beyond toying with a few design ideas. But I love seeing photos of stuff like this always thought it was too bad that AC never went anywhere with the 4 wd concepts back in the early days. Seems like if you could put a shuttle clutch on each side you wouldn't loose too much power in a turn I mean skid steers are very useful tools. But I couldn't really figure out how you build the mechanical setup to drive each side when the tractor was really designed to drive across and axel. Seems like an artulated design would ne easier to build out of d serries parts.

I did wonder if you could put a hydraulic motor as the input to the final drives and build one that way but I figured the torque required at that point would be too high. But if you could do 4 hydraulic motors one on each wheel controlling it would be easy.
