My 545 has hydraulic brakes, at least they are on the machine, never have worked well. The 605B that sold last weekend had air over hydraulic, which also didn't work. Anyone have a theory as to why they didn't just go to air brakes, just seems like the logical thing to do.

Changing the brake geometry to cams and then pancakes for air chambers - many changes . Hyd brakes are cheaper overall and do work - now my Peteybone had hyd brakes but had a belt driven vacuum pump and vacuum chamber assist on the 3-71 Detroit.
My Adams graded has straight hydraulic brakes and never have got them to work well . Dropping blade to stop and using drum brake on clutch shaft slows it down.

Are you sure that hydraulic brakes will definitely work in it?

Worked on wheel loaders in quarries years ago, AC, CAT, EUC and others, when the shoes and drums were brand new worked decent, add a few weeks of wear and hard use and they would just slow a machine down not purposely stop it even with both feet and using the seat as a leverage point! Did not matter the manufacturer all were iffy at best over time. When they could use asbestos based linings they were a little better but not a lot.
As long as they were drum they were crappy, when the later units went to disc and multi-plate wet disc brake they did better.

I much agree with "seems like the logical thing to do". I have had several loaders and backhoes and yes hydraulic brakes can be a headache to keep in good working order. I'm on my third Case 680 backhoe all with 100% air brakes, operation and service is good in my opinion perhaps because I've had gravel trucks on air for more than 30 years and with them there is no fooling you must have good brakes.

brakes must be an issue; seen a 545 on the machinery trader web site a couple days ago that was being sold "as is" with brakes not working. The machine was located at a dealer north of Denver, in, I think, Mead, CO. Looked very good in the pictures. Darrel

I saw that one, it was on CL a couple months ago and at that time the asking price was $9,000. Not a bad machine but I think I'll spend the money on the 545 I own and know what I have. Would like to figure out how to convert to air brakes, at least on the rear axle.
