I just bought a Wd 45 allis chalmers a few days ago. from the serial number its a late 1956. the tin is in pretty dang good shape and she starts and runs strong. this will be my first tractor and I bought it mainly to run a gehl chopper/mixer. I was told it could run it pretty good so i hope its true. I plan to try to restore it with the idea its 54 years old now so if i restore it I can drive it for another 50 yrs. Along the way I hope you good folks can share any advice and knowledge you may have. My dad grew up with one and is pretty excited wich in turn has me pretty excited!

Congrats! I would get a AC WD-45 myself if I found someone to trade a really good WF WD-45 for 1949 JD M lol

How is the hand clutch? Snap in tight? Be sure to run the correct oil in the hydraulics and trans. 20 wt non detergent in hydraulics , 80w90 in trans.

Having been a oil salesman and been through many trainings etc. Why non-detergent? Also I have studied and the best thing for the hydraulics on this tractor would be multi-grade tractor hyd. oil I probably just stirred up a hornets nest but just my $ .02

I trust your AC experience is as good as mine! My Grandpa and Dad always had AC. Dad even worked as a mechanic at their dealer for a time in the late 50s. Has a 'couple' of stories too...! Brought Grandpas WD into town summer of 2005, after Dad inherited it.

Good choice on the 45. It should serve you well. Forget the 20wt non detergent. Any hytran fluid will serve you and the tractor much better. I have run Farm and Fleet hytran in the 45 for the last 27 years. Works great does not foam and has all the protection needed for bearings anfd gears. I have to add also much more available than non detergent oil.

the had clutch seems to be good. I took a couple of people who grew up around em and knows them to look at it with me. It has a wide front end with a loader on it, managed to scoop it up for 2100 ready to work. going to bring that home tomorrow morning and i cant freakin wait!

I forgot to say I run the hytran in hydraulics and rearend. Gear lube only in the finals and 10w30 in the engine.

Pardon my ignorance but what do you mean by finals? I dont know much about these tractors as im a young pup. I plan on buying service/shop/owners manual as soon as i can so i can start learning. Untill then im relying on a friends knowledge(wich is considerable)to learn about it

The final drive unit takes power from the differential through a gear reduction to the wheels. There is a pan under the tractor just inside each rear wheel that needs to be removed,flushed out and replaced with gear lube.

I thought the diff should use 80w/90 is their a difference between using gear oil and hy-tran, I would prefer to use hy-tran but don't want to ruin any thing I am going to change all the fluids in my WD-45 I plan to work this summer. By the way WD-45s are great tractors and it will probably last another 50 years

Denis, yes there is a difference. Hytran is about 20wt but has addatives for high pressure not known of when they used non detergent oil and gear lube. I have had the hytran in the diff. of my 45 since I replaced 3 rd gear in 1982. The only downfall of using it is it can find smaller leaks than gear lube can.
