    Posted: 06 Mar 2013 at 6:54pm
Does anyone know what year the 6080 engine was modified to permanently address the thrust bearing issues ie: the engine was redesigned.  Common thought is it was done on the later years but unknown when.  Tractors  were built 1980 - 1985 along with some other attempts to fix, the early models required a thrust bearing adapter installed to reduce pressure from clutch particularly on start up.  If anyone knows the specific serial number on date modification was made going forward or where one might find that documented.
 Thanks !

I think Norm's book mentioned 1983 for a few updates to the engine - do not have it with me at the moment.  Problems were from the PTO, not from the clutch on start up.  Mine is a 1985, so the few problems for that tractor were worked out by then.

33--21863 was the cut in sn - can't go by date as many 6080's had the engines replaced.
About and not exactly - but if you look at the valve cover and it has a stack of spring washers under the tappet hold down bolts and if the inj lines go up and to the front then back up it is close to the sn cut in range.
AC did test the 6080  and put a lot of hours on them with no problems. HOWEVER when put on farms, the origional 4.33's had a really low compression. They were hard to start , thus the foot clutch was pushed in as was the PTO clutch and the engine was turned over for a LONG time before sputter starting then clean out. During this time there was over double the end thrust of a 180-200 due to the LUK or OMg clutch with
the two release brgs and no oil pressure. Then most operators left the PTO lever back thus ensuring the thrust load maintained a future that was not long. At first we started getting complaints of front mains leaking, then a noise in the engine as the crank ate into the block.  The program was to check all thrust measurements, and put in new slotted main thrust bearings , which was a stopgap method. Finally all units proir to the time double wide thrust brgs were started, were programed and the front support kit as  external thrust brgs were installed.  Most dealers put them on everything from  6060's  and all 6080's.  Service was most lienient in this area.  It was a mistake and one of the many nails in the AC coffin as the cost was in the millions.  The folks at Harvey charged the Ag division for all the short blocks - as always - it was not their fault - thus the money went from one pocket to the other and out the door.

it was the COMBINED pressure of the foot clutch and pto clutch being too much for the crankshaft thrust bearing.  I have the service bulletin somewhere-----.  best bet is to not leave the pto lever in the rear position when the pto is not in use.

Thanks to all of you - DSeries4, Steve Z and TBran:  I am brand new to the forum ....  So I just have a couple of follow-up questions.  DSeries4 - How can I obtain Norm's Book is it online for sale and does it go by another title?  TBRAN - So the engine serial number is the control for the newer design along with the other observations on the engine.  Steve Z:  Thanks for the guidance on the PTO lever.  As an aside, I grew up in Milwaukee and the surrounding communities.  In my younger days circa 1973 - 1974,  I had a friend who worked second shift at the AC plant in West Allis.  After his shift was over we would meet at a small bar called Tom & Jerry's on Greenfield Avenue just up from the plant.  So, those were the days as they say.....Beer

sn is on the front lh side of the block just under the head gasket - if it is missing then it has been 'messed with'.
Older blocks can have the big thrust brg and crank installed as well.  The wire edge has to be filed down in the block - the main cap is ok to accept the wide brg. .

Thanks TBran... Star anyway to get a picture of the engine with the thrust bearing adapter and one with a modified block without it? I guess maybe just google unless there is a specific spot to go to?

I also hava a 6060  bought it new and sometime later the dealer picked it up and put the "kit" on the end of the crank. tractor sn 4020.  crank still ok but 10,000 hrs later it self mixes engine oil and diesel enough that you have to add some between changes.

Forgot to say "Thanks Again" TBran for the part site... I bought the 6080...it had the thrust bearing adapter on it and was easy to identify..we checked the crankshaft for any movement forward and back and  there was none so looks like it was put on early during the retro fit period and serviced well over the years.... Wink
