Never heard a thing bad about them, granted none of the ones I've been around were in Gleaners but i have a good friend with one in a 9320 Case IH tractor and never has issues and there are several other brands that used the 8.3.  I believe Case IH used them in most all models of combines and bigger tractors. The only issues i could see them having is how they behave under all the sheet metal and parts..... Cummins can be a B***H to deal with on parts.

I think there were piston issues on earlier engines. Pistons breaking at the land area or something like that. I remember when I worked parts at a CaseIH dealer that they had some engine troubles in the early Magnums and the new pistons were different.

I've never heard of a 8.3 doing that before, I thought the bigger engines had some issues with that but if they used the same piston design that wouldn't surprise me. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the early ones had a articulated piston design with cast crowns and aluminum skirts??????

I could have remembered it wrong but I don't think so. This was in the mid to late 90's and the couple that had come into the dealership at the time I had no dealings with as one of the other parts men handled them both.

Case IH did have a recall in the early nineties with that motor i worked at a dealer and we pulled many of them out and put new kits in the motor on combines at case IH expense so any of them out there should have had that done already after that there was no problems that i recall.
