D-15 power steering fluid

In my 15II I use red ATF!

ATF or Dexron is what the owners manual recomends. Modern day universal hydraulic fluid is better and unfortunately they don't go out and re-write the owners manuals.

I use the Ford ATF as it meets the original spec called for. On each tractor I pick up, I get the PS good and warm and drain the bolster as you may be surprised at what comes out. One D15II looked like it had never been changed, was low enough to see the crescent gear pretty good, had a few line fittings leeking and did not steer near as easy as the other D-Series. Got her warm, dropped the fluid and honestly do not know how the pump handled the sludge like it did. With the drain plug out, poured 1/2 a qt. of ATF in her and still got crap out. Re-filled with new and dropped it again after a couple of hours of running so I could get what was originally in the pump/lines, plus what crud had settled on top of the gear. Much cleaner and that D15II steers easiest of any of the five D-Series I have with PS. Clean the breather cap as the dimples on the cap can completely plug of (that has the mesh inside), soak that in diesel or solvent to clean it and I do a final clean with gas and let dry overnight. Mine was also full of crud and the hex cap did not have the gasket.

Sandy Lake has the nylon gaskets and if memory serves, it is the same size as others used on the D15/D17.

If I can't see the gear through the fluid 1/4 - 1/2" above the gear, I change it and re-clean the breather cap. Those PS pumps will go a long time if you can keep em clean.

	Can't find where I left my OM, and want to top off the fluid. What oil is called for in the operator's manual. Thanks.
