I've got a friend in New Zealand that has a D270 with serial number 15651. Can anyone tell me what year tractor it is? I figure surely someone on here knows the answer or maybe Dave Everett knows? I appreciate any help on this, please.  Rick

well you appear to have a digit missing from that number, also there mat be a date cast into the tranny housing on the left hand vertical face, just a month and year, 4 digits, also look on the starter and generator, if they are lucas and original, they will be dated, either month year ie, 06-56 or like, if both match then you have your year. it can only be 1956 0r 57, 1958 and 1959 were D-272

Dave, do you think there was any over-lapping of D270 and D272 serial numbers ? In NZ we have D270's that date as 1958 and 1959 models, nos. 18690, 18702 and 20127 (the ones I know of) Our earliest D272 is 26370, a 1958 by my reckoning. Also I have D270 15660 which I date as a 1956 model. It's a shame the English factory records were lost. They would remove all doubt.

Yes it is possible as old components were used up. D272s definately have the casting date stamped in the transmission case and so do some 4 speed Bs and D270s. You also have to allow factory despatch and shipping times into the equation, which could easily allow six months or more from the manufacturing date. I had an uncle who was high up in British Leyland cars years ago, and they had cars over six years old still on the factory lot. So how long were Allis holding stock and how long did they sit on the dock and how long in transit? Sale and registration dates can easily be a long way after build date. The only certain dated items i know of are the starters and generators and the span production dates on the books i have here. D270 production is stated as starting November 1955, and D272 as November 1957, but I dont have numbers, just an assumsion that numbers were a continuation of English EB numbers that started in November 1950 with EB 4001. However we can all thank FIAT for the destruction of English Allis records at essendine

I have a D272 low version with serial number 25916. I bought it in 1999 and it had never been registered for road use so I approached the DVLA for an age related number. They wanted proof of date of manufacture and wouldn't accept 1958-1960 so I contacted Perkins who sent me the build sheet for my P3 no.1104785 which showed despatch to Allis Chalmers on 9th May 1958.
Don't know if this is of any interest.
I also have a copy of an Allis newsletter giving a brief rundown of the companies activities in the UK. This was written at the time the factory closed at Essendine and was given to me by one of the ex-employees that I met when I visited the remains of the factory some years ago.

You need to talk to Thomas Andrews of the cornist tractor club who deals with aged registration with the DVLA and provide him with a picture of the date stamping on the transmission housing.
