Is it a new "howl" or has it been there and you are curious about it? Both Dad's 6080 have had, as I would describe, a howl in 3rd slightly, in 4th noticeably since they were brand new. The spinning of a countershaft if I remember correctly.

agree with "SOY"... have the same "howl"..slight in third and rather noisy in fourth. I try not using 4th over an extended period of time as the noise/howl gives me a headache. I find the howl somewhat inconvient as I like the tractor, but have to use others instead....when the "chore" requires 4th. I have the open station version.

I found last year we were developing a howl in 3rd and 4th.  After looking at all the schematics, and getting ready to take apart the transmission, the sounds worsened, and turned out to be a blown water pump.  It may not be the same howl you heard, but this one always sounded like it was coming from below, not in front.
Cheers,
John
