    Posted: 20 Aug 2012 at 9:35pm
My son John was bush hogging(10ft) with his favorite, AC190xtIII ( with less than 200 hrs on rebuilt engine), when the CrankShaft BROKE ! ( it would still run )
We pushed it into shop, and only pulled the pan to see break at #2 from front.
John is  heartbroken and trying to consider his options?

He hates idea of not fixing his engine...  (using his fairly new parts).

But it might be easier / expense,  to find a good 2900 turbo engine to just bolt in...but what's chances / cost of finding that somewhere?

What model tractors / combines had the 301 engine?

What suggestions do ya'll have?

thanx for any help?

Did you have the crankshaft ground? If so was it ground correctly? They ain't as tolerant as a crank out of say a WD.

get another crank, you have to take out the motor either way you go,and it wont take much longer to change cranks as running around after another motor which will still need work when you get it(second hand motors are never perfect)like fixing oil leaks,or changin over your fuel pump ect.

Long time ago I bought one with a broken crank at an auction, didn't know it at the time but I saw a guy a week or so after the auction that knew I bought the tractor and he told me to check out the front pulley as it looked like it was loose, turned out crank was broke right toward the front, tractor ran ok,I drove it home about 25 miles. I ended up just changing the crank, took the engine out tipped it over and put new used one in, you just have to turn it right to get through the front plate if you don't take it off.

If a crankshaft for a 301 is ground, the ends of the bearing journal
must have a radius, rather than a square edge where the grind
stops. It a radius is not formed, the sharp edge will cause a stress
riser and a crack and break will soon happen. This crank also must
be shot peened after grinding to also help eliminate stress on the
crankshaft. I THINK I have this stated correctly, so HTH

If you reuse the block, you may need to have it align-bored.  I have always heard that is the correct way to fix a block that had a broken crank, maybe someone else can comment if it's necessary for these engines?

Dont feel to bad i had mine overalled about 20yrs ago and ran it about 20hrs and a new rod broke and went through the block, so i was sick , and i pulled it off behind the barn and there it set for 2yrs, then one day i was at a salvage yard and found a engine for $650 i brought it home and took the 5 new pistons and sleaves out of the ond engine and and picked the best piston of the salvage yard engine and put new rings on it and put it togather and that was 20yrs ago and its still running, so dont feel to bad its happend to me to..good luck.

Wow, thanx for the suggestions and stories.  Good to hear from others!

Our mechanic thought these 301 engines had lots of Crankshaft problems.  But, we don't remember reading on this AC web site for many years, any major weaknesses with them.  Nothing like the 3rd gear problems?  Do ya'll know any problems?

Would a slightly leaking front main seal, (when running warm or hard plowing)  have been a warning to us?
thanx fellows!

The 301 was one of the best engines built in it's era IMO. The cranks are fussy when they are reground. They gotta be done right. Little hard starting is the only complaints I can remember back when I worked a few years at an Allis dealer. Not as hard starting as an equivalent Deere. I always heard that the french forged blocks had more cavitation problems and that seems correct to me as the only ones I ever saw with pin holes in the sleeves in the 4 years I worked at the Allis dealer were the engines with the word France cast onto the side of the block.

Your mechanic screwed up and is now blowing smoke to cover his trail.  Ask him if he shot peened it after grinding.  And when you get the engine apart, look to see if he ground a radius at the edges of the reground crank journals and look for signs of shot peening.
