At the time when KHD purchased Allis-Chalmers ag division, were the factories already shutdown?

I don't think so, but they were closed shortly after the buyout. I say this because the last tractor off the West Allis line had Deutz-Allis decals on it.

AC was already in the process of shutting down some of the other factories. I believe the LaPorte Works was closed down a few years prior to the buyout. Some of the older factories were shutdown and things were consolidated. Pittsburgh and the Boston Works were getting old and they shut those down in the 1970s and moved production of those products elsewhere.

Yes they were! We used to have an 8030 and it had "Deutz-Allis" naming on it. We peeled it off and under it was the Allis-Chalmers name. They just made a decal to go right over the main one. Allis-Chalmers had all the stuff there, so Deutz probably just used what was left and made a smaller decal to put over it. They didn't want to go through the hassel of making a whole new decal when they already new they were shutting down the plant and ceasing the production of 8000 series tractors.

Must have been a worrisome job for the remaining employees- slapping  new decals on remaining inventory. Did they make the dealers change the decals on unsold tractors?
Tractor data.com shows the 8000 series made untill 1988 is that correct?

The Hinomoto tractors continued to be built, they replaced the orange paint with green?

And then I guess the green replacement tractors started showing up with zero percent
Allis DNA in them. Where did the green tractors go, straight to the dealers, or
were tires and such assembeled over here. If so, where did they do that?

The Allis customer base basicly rejected the Duetz greeen tractors?

As much as I read about this it is all still a puzzle to me.

Our F3 Gleaner  had the Deutz-Allis stickers over the A/C stickers also. So did both the heads.

I have annual reports, Scope magizines and other AC stuff that say management pretty much blamed the AG division for the demise of Allis as a whole ; they were the big money makers till the Eightys then they were the big losers ;what a time to introduce a whole new line of tractors, i believe the Ag Division was proping up every division AC had ; then it started losing money and down she goes

From what I've read all tractors that were on dealer lots unsold had to have the decal changed for warrenty reasons. Maybe that was in swinfords book? I can't remember off the top of my head.

we have an N6 and an L3 that are late enough they say deutz, but are still all orange. the center caps have allis under the cap, pressed up from the inside, but have an external KHD sticker. IIRC, the SN tags still say Allis. there are small decals that went over allis, but on the butt end of the machines where it was all galvanized, I bet decal remover was in order for the individual block letters.

in fact, the N6 must have been really towards the end, it has a rigid seat with no suspension, and it is running the small bolt pattern finals like the N5, so it must have been a cost saving deal.

I do remember a 8000 series up at Sumerix's that had a deutz swap. surely a local shop swap deal, but maybe a deutz prototype? IDK, I never called and asked.

I believe KHD only got unsold inventory and did not assemble any tractors but I could be wrong. I've seen a few KHD green 8000 series back in the day but I think they might have been repainted and redecaled at the dealership. I was told most of them had to be re repainted orange to sell them.

My 85 8070 had a KHD enblem glued over the original AC grill emblem. I replaced it with a new AC emblem and Andrew pried the old ones apart. The worst part is the back window doesn't have Allis Chalmers etched into it like my 8050 so they must have replaced it when they put the Duetz decals on. At least it stayed orange, the dealer or the original owner put an Allis decal over the Duetz decals that were put over the original Allis decals on the side panels. LOL

It's no surprise that KHD couldn't sell what was basically a repowered White when White couldn't sell them in the first place. Farmers weren't really interested the air cooled engines and the color they chose didn't help any.

I know its not the best pic but my dad got 2 of these watches with the purchase of a new 8030.  It is(the watch) a Deutz green 8000 FWA so I'm guessing they at least thought of making them.  I have seen pics on NewAgTalk of a Deutz green R50 as well.

I remember my Dad and uncles asking the company rep at our local dealer's annual open house when they were going to return to orange and the guy laughed and said farmers weren't interested in what color their tractors were painted. I also remember when Deutz first bought Allis and how the rep promised that they were going to continue the 8000 and 6000 series tractors and had no plans for shutting that production down. Liar liar liar. Before Deutz-Allis I had family members who bought new Allis-Chalmers orange tractors and after Deutz-Allis they started buying new or near new tractors with warrantee. Never did anyone in my family ever buy a green tractor new or used and I'll wager that there will never be a new or used Massey-Ferguson bought by a single family member either. So was that company rep correct when he said farmers don't care what color their tractors are? My cousin who is the the largest farmer in the family has already started the switch to CaseIH with a CaseIH combine and now a CaseIH 4WD. He said he'll never own a Massey and I believe him. Hows that for taking it off topic?

Here’s a Chicago Tribune article dated March 1985, about the 100 million dollar Duetz cash buyout. It also talks about Allis Chalmers past debt, past farm equipment income, past factory shutdowns timeline before the buyout. It helps answer some questions per this prior 2012 forum topic & discussion.

I put a few of those decals over Allis decals .Tractors that where bought under Allis credit that farmers had, where to have the decals put on them also. I still have a set of decals ,went out to a farm to do some work on other tractors  and while there was to install these decals ,Farmer would not let me put them on , so I kept them in my tool box .

I always thought Allis sold off the wrong assets. The name might still be around if they had dumped their energy business.

hey my old thread is alive.
Diesel World magazine had some articles, I link to one, and they mention two others.

I think the "fix" was in at day one to not re-start any of the Allis factories (except Gleaner). Didn't Allis stop the foundry a year or two prior? I wonder when the last torque tube was cast...

And remember they sold the industrial side to Fiat- didn't that make anyone scratch their head? And that also came to failure, just like Duetz-Allis.

I think it is interesting that White-Oliver outlasted Allis-Chalmers. Oliver was popular around here.  It was used as basis of the larger Duetz-Allis, with the air cooled german motor. So AGCO "saved" White-Oliver-Cockshut, and let Allis die off. Then mixed it all up with  Massey Ferguson. Gleaner survived.  Simplicity escaped, but now what are they really?

I’ve spent way too much time wrenching on the motor of our Duetz powered R52 to ever touch one again. Dealer was 3/4 mile from my house plenty around at one time all the kraut cans are dead.
