D14 Engine tick?

  I seen a D14 for sale 10 miles from me. Hes asking $1500 OBO but it has an engine tick he said. He said he had the top half worked on but it still has a tick. I dont know what they did to it but what would be below the head that would tick? And what do you think its worth.

If it's a tick then it's most likely the valve clearance is a little too loose.  This is harmless.  Even if the head was worked on or even rebuilt you must set the valve clearance after re-installing the head.  Now if it's a knock then that's not good and an engine rebuild will be coming down the road very soon.  I'm no expert but that's my 1.5 cents worth.
 
If it's a rod knocking then $1000 may be too much.

A tick can be an exhaust leak also. I would think if they worked on the head, they used new a manifold gasket but it could have a small hole or leak in there somewhere.

I havent looked at it yet, I was wanting a hundred series tractor but since this one was close I was going to look. Thanks for the tips and Ill see how it goes.

Had one in my 14 . Pulled down twice . It was a oil ring on no 3 that had to much up and down play . Engine had got to hot  , heat guage was bad.

If it is a tick, put a tick collar on it or spay it with deet.

Seriously, I bet it is an exhaust leak.

Also does it tick all the time, loaded, or un loaded? A tick that goes away under load is worn wrist pin or pins or no lube to them. One way to check for a wrist pin tick is to pull plug wires off while running one at a time. Noise will go away when you kill spark to problem cylinder.
However I agree with most its 98% valve train tick.
