I bought a 3pt hopper fertilizer spreader yesterday....the large Befco model. It is missing half the pto shaft...I could spend the money and find a new one, or I can cut down the one the is on my pristine AC silage blower....the shaft that powers the wagon to unload it. It has never been used, most likely never will be.....what would you do?

I'd go new generic as opposed to robbing an old original you know you can't get a new one of those.

I agree with Curt. You'd probably kick yourself later if you robbed the shaft. Can you go to an implement dealer or salvage yard to find another that may work?

If it was me, I would just take the half of one the same shaft size that I have in a pile in the corner of the shop and then when I needed it for the implement it originally came off(before it got tossed in the corner with the others no one knows where they came from...) I would 'borrow' it back.

Joe I hadn't seen that one on-line. I may go that route, will call and see. I think they also sell the Eurocardan that this one has, maybe I can just buy half. The half I have hasn't even been used....too bad there isn't a place where mismatched drive lines can go....kinda like a lost sock drawer LOL!

I'd bet you'd spend more than that for just one half

Your drive load on that spreader is close to nothing. Some of the flimsiest material you can find will be more than adequate. I have stuck the round style with the two humps into a piece of sqaure tube before. I believe you are handy enough to come up with a unique solution with stuff that you already got around the place. But, time is money. And if I could really buy one for $50. I would be all over it.

I am not sure but I have been told that the gearbox for unloading the wagon is kinda a Rare attachment for that silage blower? Dont wreck it.
I have seen numerous pto shafts sell at some auctions for pretty cheap. I am sure someone on here has a shaft for you to cut to lenght and use. |
