hello everybody- just got my "new" 1984 L3 here. the hydro handle is very very stiff- put pen. oil on both ends and worked it a bunch prior to driving home. this thing has sat in a shed for 3 years.
driving home the thing was not fast on the road like my m2. either the engine wasnt to speed (nothing up top works- might be fuses or mice) or the hydro is weak?
how do you check the hydro? i can put a handheld tach on the engine- 2500 on the 426 right???
honw much travel should the hydro cable have?

I think 2550 is the right RPM with the machine engaged.

i will change the filters and put in good fuel and see if that helps- i am worried about the hydro itself- how do you check that thing?

Does the hydro use a cable from the handle? Just wondering if it's so corroded inside it's sheath that's its stiff and possibly worked it's way out of adjustment????

If you didn't have trouble loosing speed going up hills on the road, the hydro is probably fine. I had to change the hydro cable on my 1984 L3 last fall because the ends had gotten loose on the internal cable and I didn't have the full range of travel. The handle in the cab has a hole in the mounting for a grease fitting inside the console. That, plus the tension applied by the jam nuts are what give the handle more/less resistance.

If loosing speed, check tension on transmission input drive idler. The bolt has a tendency to back out of the spring allowing the belt to slip.

will check engine rpm and the tension. if tight- then what? is there a "field test"?

Clint-
Just wondering if you might have gotten any PMs or anything about this. You can also get an idea about slippage by how the grooves feel on the front pulley. I have also heard that there is a way that you can "turn up the pressure" on the hydro without doing much work, but I have never really understood how to turn it up, or how to check it to know if that is the problem or not. We have one on an L2 that is acting up as well. I have one on our parts machine, but dont want to swap if I dont have to, and I would like to know if the other one was actually better before I did the work to switch!

Hi Adam,
the belt was loose but not bad i thought- i dont think that is the cause. i havent had time to do anything yet. i need to go through the machine in the comeing week or two- i want to run wheat with it.
i ordered new belts for the hydro and to the main from the engine- will put that on and go from there- my hyd oil level in the side tank was very very low- could this effect the tranny?

yes if the hydraulic oil is low that will effect the hydro.

ryan- on my m2 the hydro oil is contained there- does the l3 have some sort of "charge" system on it from the back tank and pump?
