    Posted: 17 May 2012 at 11:21am

There are two different bearings on a Model G Fan Shaft.  The part numbers are 800420 (Fan End) & 800421 (Pulley End).

I have a publication from Delco - Bulletin 2A-138-3 dated November 1974.  The title is "Farm & Off The Road Equipment Manufacturers To NDH Bearings Cross Reference Lists".

This Cross Reference indicates that the Model G Fan Shaft Bearing (Fan End) is NDH 488016 & the Fan Shaft Bearing (Pulley End) is NDH 488503.

About a week ago there was an eBay auction for NDH 488503 bearings.  The picture showed a Red, White & Blue NDH Bearing Delco Box (no number).

I won two of these bearings.  Yesterday they arrived.

The boxes were different than the Red, White & Blue Box

I took one bearing out of its box and found that it was marked NDH 8503 Made In USA.

The bearing looks correct for the application but the numbers are different.

So, finally, the question:

Is a NDH 8503 bearing equivalent to the NDH 488503 bearing that I thought I was getting?

Since the rated bearing load would be considerably higher than belt load on the bearings for the G fan shaft, the only cross reference info that would matter is bore, OD and width.  I see it has shields, so there is no issue with debris infiltration.  The original New Departure Hyatt number may have used the "48" at the beginning of the designation to indicate the retaining ring and shields.

I realize that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing but...

I found a pdf file that had a reference to New Departure 488503.

The above is a bearing interchange list between Consolidated Bearings and other bearings (including New Departure).

Doing a search for 8503, 88503 & 488503 would seem to indicate the following:

8503 has one shield & one felt seal
88503 has two felt seals
488503 has two felt seals & a snap ring

However, the bearing I received from the eBay auction (stamped NDH 8503) has a snap ring.

Maybe I'm interpreting the pdf file's information incorrectly.

Best regards,

Scott

I'm still trying to determine if the bearings I received (NDH 8503) are equivalent to NDH 488503.

Best regards,

Scott

Charles,

So you think the bearings that I received have 2 felt seals?

Best regards,
