o-k you guru's....my 180 diesel runs great....for a little while! then it just stops...like when you shut the pump off! no warning...just shuts down. it won't re-start until i loosen the cap ontop of the fuel filter and pump the primer, will get alot of air bubbles out, tighten the cap, secure the primer pump, engine starts, we go about 500 ft....and it quits! the tank has been cleaned, the sediment bowl cleaned, new fuel filter...what else can i do?? it's not leaking anywhere between the tank and pump so to let air in!

loosen the screws on the timing cover (it'll spew fuel out) and see if it keeps running then. If it does, get in touch with injector pump Ed. Darrel

My guess would be is there is somewhere it is sucking air into the system before the filter. It may not leak, but they can still suck air, had this happen on a Peterbilt semi at work recently. Replaced fuel line and it was fine after that.
Your issue doesn't really sound like a pump issue, but more of a supply issue. Cap may not be venting enought either.

Shameless I feel your pain buddy. I fought that issue all winter it seems with the XT. Until I get the head back and on I won't know if the fight's still on! I held a piece of plywood over tanks filler neck and pressurized with air nozzle sticking through a hole bored through the wood. I ran her pressurized and at least if it kept running I knew then that somewhere there had been a suction leak. Mysterious thing is a suction leak wont leak...it'll just suck air! When they work they work and when they leak they aggravate and the worst part is you can't see it!

Do what Darrel says. If it runs while leaking fuel, the return line from the pump is blocked. Knocking out the check valve on top of the pump will solve the problem but the problem was caused in the first place by a governor rubber ring in the pump comming apart. Been there.

sounds to me like a supply blockage in tank like Mack stated. While the flex ring in pump has probably deteriorated, the plugged return usually causes a slow loss of power then just idle, and eventually die. Let it sit a few minutes(housing pressure goes down) then it will run again, lose power and die. You say it's like you shut it off suddenly. The air bubbles in supply line also tell me it's starved of fuel, cavitating the inlet. Good luck! Ed.

Ed, I was going off my D21 experience last summer, assuming that this was a similar set up. If memory serves me correctly, my 21 just up and died as if it were shut off with the switch. Darrel

o-k...i took the sediment bowl off, the screen was pluged so bad it couldn't be cleaned (tried it and damaged it) soooo...went to town, the farm store didn't have just the screen, so i bought a whole new bowl and all. took the blow gun and blew out all the lines, got it all back together, got the air outta the lines...tractor started right up...ran smooth, got the planter ready,(was already hooked to it) went to the field, and about halfway through making the end rows...it died! AGAIN! and continued to die after bleeding the air outta the top of the filter housing....finally got it home....guess i'll call a mechanic! i'll finish with the 7010! hate to use that tractor as it's so heavy! oh well!

i had a similar problem with a john deere 620 gas before, tank was full of crap (rust and lots of debris from sitting) it kept plugging up the fuel system. i rigged up a fuel line with a clear fuel filter and ran it down to a bucket with paint strainers. i took 5 gallons of gas and kept running it threw til i got a good portion of the crap out of the tank. u may need to pull the tank out and have it cleaned out. i didn't on the j.d. because they are a pain in the a*# to take out. good luck

I had to pull the tank off of my 180 and clean it completely out shortly after I bought the tractor as the neck in the sed. bowl was plugging.
