Going to look at a CA Friday that owner says has a bad transmission. He thinks its a C, but from a picture I would say CA. Figured easier to look for myself as its apparently remote from him. Anyway, I was wondering what is likely to be the problem - do CA or for that matter C transmissions have any real issues - I'm thinking it may be hand clutch thats gone south if it is indeed a CA. Looks to be otherwise in fair condition paint and tire wise. Next question - Is $500 a reasonable price? Also has a rough parts tractor - wondering what that would be worth. Thanks Ed

A 'C' transmission is the same as a 'B' - 3 forward speeds.
A 'CA' has 4 forward speeds. A lot of the gears in a 'CA' interchange with D-10, D-12, D-14, and D-15. If it is a CA and runs - $500 is a steel. Gary

Thanks for reply - Supposedly motor runs but does not drive. I know 3 sp vs 4 sp C vs CA - pretty sure its a CA as it appears to have tractor s/n pad on drivers left - but picture is low res and small and can't blow it up much. Question is whether Trans is likely shot as seller believes or whether it may be something else like hand clutch. And if trans is gone - what is weak link in trans - sounds like at least there should be transmission gear sets available.

Even if it doesn't run, you better bring it home with a parts tractor for $500. The CA has a constant mesh tranny like the WD and 45. The gears don't usually go bad, it's the spline the shift collar locks on that goes bad( but that is part of the gear). It could very well be the hand clutch slipping that would make someone think the tranny is bad. B and C trannys won't have interchangeable parts with the CA but you could swap out the whole thing, just lose the extra gear.

Parts tractor is extra - maybe $200-300 as it is much rougher than the one he wants $500 for. But I'm still planning to take a 30 foot trailer with a winch

Don't pass up a deal like that. Who knows you could be saving it from the scrap yard. I recently bought a CA and a WD45 gas from a guy. He said they didn't run. Haven't ran in 2 or 3 years. Neither motor was stuck, he didn't have the time or sense to mess with them. I guess he thought the gas was supposed to stay fresh for 3 years. None the less I hauled them home for a song.LOL

Having owned CA's, grew up with Ca's, I have seen the hand clutch slip so bad that the uninformed would think the transmission has quit. Most transmission problems on CA's is jumping out of third gear going down hill because people rake the gears when changing gears. I can show you a CA with thousands of hours and the transmission is still good and unit is 60 years old. Parts are worth more than $500.
My 2 cents.
