I haven't been able to find a picture or a diagram of this. The brake spring ends ? Are they supposed to just stick out and hook over the edge of the hole in the housing ? Or are they supposed to hook over a small pin across the holes.

Be careful. I had the spring come loose after replacing the brakes on my D17 IV. Now I have to tear it all apart again to hook it over the edge of the hole again. I'll try to figure out a way to prevent that from happening a second time. Dave

Dave...You're talking about a Series IV and I believe that Denny is talking about an early series. Yours is a little more serious, since you have to pull the back axle housing back off. Normally, they just pop back in the hole on the early series D17. Rick

On mine (d17 s.3) I popped it through and put a nail a cross and popped it back in so it can't POP off and into the hole

Dave I hope it was on the left side! I'm getting pretty good at mine, just finished up the left side of one rusted up 175...I think if all the bolts and pins came out easily, and I had all the seals, o-rings, brakes, anti-seize and thread sealant ready I could do that side in a couple of hours.

The reason I askedd the question was that on my rear brake springs, One of them has a small pin through the spring loop. I think I might pin the rest of them. No popping back through then. Same idea as the nail. just a small round pin about an inch and a half long with a head on one end and a small cotter through the other end.
