    Posted: 27 Feb 2012 at 1:29pm
I have a Oliver trail plow that I use with my B to do gardens with. When transporting it I can only go in slow second as if I go faster it starts to sway back and forth pretty violent.
Any ideas on what would cause this?

This one is missing (Well it looks like it never had one) the tail wheel.

Is that the reason? I'll rig up my own tail wheel if needed.

Slop in the hitching. I have had two old Oliver plows and they are the worst I have ever had hitched to a tractor for hitch slop due to the way the hitch is made and in honesty they were both darned near completly worn  out.  Look back while going fast enough to make it sway and see what is moving around and repair it.

I have a disk that likes to wobble when I pull it behind my truck. I take a ratchet strap and hook it from the tongue of the disk to one corner at the gangs and cinch it down.  The side load takes most of the slop out of the hitch and it pulls like a dream up to about 50km/h.  Can you do that with your plow?
I hate going slow on the road too Wink

I have a two botton #8 IHC on rubber, gravel and some blacktop make it wander and jerk back and forth and you have to back the WC down to half throttle to make it stop. On other roads I can hammer it wide open to the full 12 or 13 mph. I think it's because I replaced the rotten back tire with a regular trailer tire instead of the original angled type so it rides on the edge of one side.

Two more things.  On many plows, the two wheels are not across from each other.  This will make it sway.  Also as with any trailer, if the weight behind the wheels is greater than the weight ahead of the wheels, you will never get it to stop swaying.

The best solution would be a mounted plow.  In addition to totally eliminating any transport problems, you can get into and plow tighter garden areas.

True on the mounted plow. I've looked for 2 years for a plow for my B and have yet to find one within reason and distance. Most are missing items that I need to mount it up, I can find the plow and beam but the remaining items are gone.

The thing with trailing plows is to not get them up high when towing. Keeping them down low while driving really helps the hitch geometry.

Dad bought new Oliver plows when I was a kid and our instructions were, (keep it out of road gear when going down the road to the field) They would sway some in fith gear if you went wide open. I have never pulled my old well worn Oliver plow down the road.

I probably have what you need to mount a B plow, or at least a large part of it.....

Well this one is well worn for sure. I think the missing (Optional?) transport wheel plays a big issue. I am going to see if I can make one.

Right now the rear plow almost skims the road when traveling.

Charlie:

I'm sure we can scare up enough parts to put a pick up plow on your B.  I know I have a spare depth lever, and I might have a spare beam & moldboard assembly.  The drawbar and brackets might be tough, but I'm sure that something could be found reasonably close.

Thanks Brett! I have the Depth lever, I thought you just reversed the drawbar?

I've watched CL and Claz for a long time and strike out. Garden plowing is paying for my toys right now.
