There is an auction tomorrow that has one. It is a farm tractor with lots of dirt and dings. Says he has the carb and hood to convert to gas. I haven't the foggiest idea what it is worth. Can anyone give me some ideas?

I bought a running one Southwest of Oklahoma City for $1200, this winter.  It's a series II, and is in very good shape, missing a couple of items, like a tin side panel, and a few other minor cosmetic stuff.  I think this is the exception to the rule, but LP will not bring as much as gas typically, because fewer people want to mess with LP.  A good running gas Series II D17 in that area should bring around $3000.00 somewhere.  So an LP would be in the 2-3K range.  With the good rubber and the straight fenders, I would imagine the top end of that range.

How hard is it to convert over to gas?  What does a guy need to do?

Why convert it to gas?  Gas is 3.50 or so a gallon and LP is 1.50 to 1.75 and burns clean and will make your D17 even more economical to run. Buy it and use it the way it is.  Will be cheaper in the long run to buy what you need to fill it.  When I first bought my D17 LP I used a 30lb forklift cylinder to fill it, it took a while but got the job done.  When we bought our current place, I had our LP supplier put a liquid valve in our LP tank and I fill off of that.  Yes it takes a while but not near as long as it did with the 30lber. 
My 17 is a Midwest tank conversion.  Is that a converion also? It looks like a factory style tank with the fills on the bottom side.  If it is factory, think it has LP in the serial number.

I agree with Wil, why convert it to gas? I bought an LP D-14 a while back and have not regretted it at all. It does burn fuel cleanly. Refueling is a bit of a pain, since I don't have a residential LP tank, but the dealer is not two miles from me, so it's not so bad.
I found out only 750 LP D-14s were produced, so maybe the D-17 LP is a bit rare, too? I don't know. Don noticed the PD and LP tank positions, but on my D-14, there is plenty of room to move the PD without pinching any fingers. And the D-17 TedJ is asking about looks factory to me; not a conversion. Anything that I should be looking out for?  What would make it a bad buy?  We pay over $2 here for LP this year.  But I think you guys have talked me into keeping it LP.  Now, what is the tractors biggest problems, what to look out for?  Thanks so far, I'm learning.

It looks like a series I to me, and it does look factory.  As far as converting it to gas, that depends on how far you want to go, to factory gas?? or just something that will work well.

If you could find a donor tractor, you would need the gas tank/gauge, the tank mounting frame, the fuel sediment bowl/valve, the side panels underneath, the carburetor, fuel line, engine side panels, the top center hood section, I think is different.  Those are the big things I can think of off the top of my head, there may be more, like thermostat housing, etc....

Frankly I would leave it alone myself, but then I like Propane tractors.  If you do decide to do this, I may be able to help you round up all the parts, there is an allis graveyard near the farm in Nebraska, and it has a lot of D17s, it would be cost prohibitive, but it could be done.

You will not be able to determine the tractors worst condition, tranny abuse, these trannys didn't like grinding, and if it was ground, it will pop out of gear, typically third gear, since that one is used the most.  Otherwise if it runs good, and the hydros work, p/s works, and all, it will be a pretty good tractor, they were fairly bullet proof

Others with more experience than I will chime in here, but the first thing I'd want to know about is the condition of the regulator. The old Ensigns are no longer available to my knowledge, but I think the Impco T-60 is a replacement, at least for the D-14...they're fairly expensive. Diaphragms are what give way on those, I believe. LP carburetors are very simple, so it's probably OK.
Outside of that, all the usual things...staying in all gears in high and low ranges, clutch, and brakes are what I would be lookng at. I live in dread of transmission problems. But again, more experienced readers will hopefully comment. Good luck. Larry

Aaron, I am the tall guy with a crew cut and hair is gray.  I don't wear a hat, but will have gloves and a red/white La Crosse Fire Dept jacket with my name on the front.  Come on up and introduce yourself.  PS I MIGHT have a hat on, only sposed to be in the high 20's and the wind will be howling.  With the wind chill, it will probably be in the single digits.  See ya there...

That does look like a factory tank and hoods for an LP. The PD lever is different on the LP tractors for more clearance due to the wider LP tank, but the one in the first picture is really close to the tank as Don mentioned.

I did not buy the tractor.  I had to leave early because of a medical emergency in the family. (Darn cell phones)  If I wouldn't have had the cell phone with, I would have never known until I got home later.  Was scary for a while there though.  Had the daughter in Eau Claire passing lots of blood.  She's in the hospital and we are here in Eau Claire until at least tomorrow some time.  Wish her luck please.

AaronH, did you go to the auction?  What did it sell for?  should I cry now or not?

Mike, sounds like you didn't stick around either.  What did you think of the tractor?  Saw you coming as I was leaving, but too late to wave or stop and say hi.  How long did you stay?  I wanted that welder too.  DARN!  Might have a GOOD deal on an Allis blade though.  Talked to a guy there.  Wish me luck.

Don(MI) the PD handle WAS rubbing against the tank.  It was close to start with and had a lot of slop in it.  I think it could have been fixed.

Hope my daughter Angie is better, but darn kids.  LOL  God always has a better plan than I do though.  Just have to follow His lead.

Some auction results. The D17 sold for $2025, cultivator went for $160, the plow $150 range, the disc $425, not sure what the blade sold for. I bought the disc.
