On the D17 series IV gas the muffler clamps to a piece of pipe screwed into the manifold.
The pipe flange on bottom of muffler actually touches manifold so it is about 3 to 4 inches on the oval part below surface of the left hood.
I know because I had to cut and thread a piece of 1-1/2" or 2" pipe to thread into manifold.

Make sure that is the correct muffler. May be a cheap one that someone put on.

If none of the forum vendors can get the Nelson, check with your local Cummins/Fleetguard dealer (go to http://www.nelsondiv.com to find a dealer). The D17 IV gas muffler should be 08441T, but be sure to double-check the dimensions before ordering, as they are not inexpensive.
