I was hoping to get the engine back in my buddies D17 tonight after installing new rear main seal....pilot bearing...and throw out-bearing. Went to go back with the clutch and realized the cheap universal alignment kit I bought has nothing that will work on this clutch. Made extra trip to town with clutch disk and old pilot bearing....nobody has anything that will work. Anybody know where I can order one? Thanks.

I have used my eye before. Line things up before you try to drop the engine in. I have an advantage now, I have a lathe , I can turn something to work if I can find something big enough in the scrap pile:)

Often I use a deepwell socket that will fit into the pilot bearing and add an extension out through the clutch disc. If you center the deflection it ussually comes up close enough to drop in.
Yea, I can fix that.....

I had thought about that but was getting tired and figured I'd never get it right being worn out. I'll try that next time though if the weather holds out. The building I am working in is to short and the door has to be open to use the cherry picker. Supposed to be getting rain so I may not get to get engine in for a while now.

I eyed up the one in my D19 when I put it in and I didn't have a problem getting everything back together.   I got it snugged up just enough where I could move it around but it would stay after moving it, and I looked at it really close and then tightened the pressure plate up the rest of the way and was good to go.

If you haven't surfaced the flywheel, you can "feel" where center is, just by moving the disc around, mount the pressure plate, but leave the bolts real loose, lift up on the pressure plate to remove any bind from the disk, then with the other hand move the disk around until you feel it kinda drop into the wear circle, then it will be lined up, while holding the disk push in on the pressure plate, and tighten the bolts up.

Done this many times, worked every time so far.

When I surface the flywheel, I sight it in by using the splines and the pilot bearing surfaces, kind of an art, figuring out the illusion from the eye, but not too bad.

Once it is much bigger than a D series, I get the alignment tool out, too much work reworking the disc in the bigger tractors.

You can find one that fits in the pilot bearing and then wrap electrical tape around the rest of it until it fits the ID of the splines of the clutch disc.

Have used broom handle etc. many times. Even use the eyeball method. Make sure if you eyeball it you get a good straight view. At least, in my case, if I'm not straight on the sight path, I don't stand a chance.

I use an input shaft out of an old parts WC. But have just eyeballed many.
