i got a call from the shop today, the governor is outputting just fine, so check your wires and regulator. well heck...i thought i checked the gov correctly and found it to be bad.....oh well, a new regulator is on the way now. in the mean time, how the heck do i get the old belt off and new one on? i don't mind cutting it off, but i'd like to see how it goes back on. do i have to take anything other than the gov off? it doesn't seem to want to come off the bottom pulley....almost like something is blocking it on the front side......50 years of hardened gunk maybe?
and what size/part number is the belt? D17 IV gas.

Skip - think you meant to say Generator, not Governor!
That belt is a challenge but I have always been able to get it off and on between the front crank pulley and the front bolster. If you get a notched belt it will go and off easier. You have to rotate the 5 blade fan so the larger opening is available to work in. A big screw driver helps in pushing the new one down past the crank pulley. The D17 SIV gas fan belt number is 229211. According to Jay Vee's web site the automotive part number is 17460...that decodes into 17/32 inch wide belt with a 46.0 inch outside circumference. thanks mike,
that first line pretty much sums up my day......i get close, but that's about it. the whole time i was typing that i kept rechecking it.....thinking, "man, i think i've spelled it right, just doesn't seem right"....i guess i know why now.
so basically, i can change it w/out taking extra stuff off.....just 2 bloody knuckles to get it off, and 4 to get it on? hopefully a local shop has what i need.....between a belt, a new voltage regulator a GENERATOR that is supposed to be good and maybe make a couple new wires just to make sure those are good....i'd like to have it run as it should by the weekend.
