There are a few strings on here with different questions of rebuilding the 45. I am still a newbie when it comes to all of this and I have quoted others from other strings and have questions.
I have heard this quite often on here. Is this true? Just changing these two items can do this?
Are there any differences?? Are they the same? |

If main bearings comes with kit you will have to buy main bearings. 170 mains and WD45 mains are different.
If your 45 is not 12V it will need converted. MACK

You may also need to increase engine speed by using a different governor spring in addition to the sleeves and pistons to achieve the horsepower. At some point while you fine tune you may also have to do some carb work or change to a larger capacity carburator.

Its not that simple to just make 50 HP, although these AC engines seem to respond very well to small changes. Compression = HP but it takes a lot of other small adjustments and revisions to make the combo work. Ask anyone who is serious about Tractor pulling and they'll tell you. Sometimes it takes a while to get the right combination (and that's part of the fun and experimentation) but once you get on a roll with that combo and things start working and falling into place, look out competition! Also helps in the wallet department to for some cash flow to make that combination come together. LOL! Some of our Orange family members here have shown us some pretty cool stuff for engine mods and scratch built mountain motors. If your a gearhead like me, you can appreciate their efforts quite a bit! Love some of the combinations and trick stuff some of these gentlemen do to these engines to make em' talk, and keep Allis-Chalmers on top of the heap!. There's nothin' wrong with an Orange PO#1 or #2 Tractor with a serious attitude...

Unless I understood DrAllis wrong:
"Anything you do will require 12 volt starting. If it was MINE, it would get a std D17 AGCO piston/sleeve kit, which raises the compresssion from 6.5 to 1 to 7.25 to 1 and will increase the HP from 43HP to probably 53HP at 1400 rpm's. Believe me, that is enough to rip all the teeth off of the PTO gears if you ever get rough with it. The kit drops right in with no hassles and will still sound like an AC PowerCrater engine" Crank is different in the D17 so the main bearings will not interchange among the two. The D17 makes more HP than the WD45 b/c of higher compression and it runs a tad bit faster. So 50HP is pretty much a drop in for this engine. I would go with the D17 governor spring also to raise RPM. Yes there will be "tuning" involved but there is always "tuning" involved when rebuilding a engine. Where do you get a D17 spring?

Agco still has them...I've heard they are fairly pricey. I'm sure you could find a good used one.

My WD made 50 on the dyno with a 45 crank, head, carb, intake and an AGCO engine kit for a WD45.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that was measured on an M&W dyno wasn't it?? If it was a factory stock WD45 piston & sleeve kit and everything else is absolutely stock your HP ain't really 50...it's still 43 hp. Really low air temps add to the 43 but an M&W dyno is notorious for reading a little high. Diesel engines can be given more fuel to increase the HP, but gas engines (if every thing is still bone stock) just don't make more than they were ever rated at....they can't.....sucks, doesn't it?? Now, a WD45 making 53 hp with a D17 motor kit in it is possible because the D17 was rated WITH power steering and many WD45's don't have that PS HP drag on them.

The spring is about $65 from Agco.
I think it is 70229519 spring with plunger. pretty easy to change with pliers. Easiest without rad on. A&I and other aftermarket companies sell high compression kits for the WD45. I assume these must be similar to D17 kits.

compression is always a trump card. It allows so mcuh more wiggle room . cam duration etc. 12.1 compression ratio 240ci with a mild head flow of 150 cfm 170 cam rocker geometry fixed to get net valve lift not counting about 6 degrees more cam duration from the 1.85 rocker change will make conservative 75 horses usually more but if i was selling i would go conservative to make purchaser happy. after all 8.1 226 with 170 cam and shoddy rocker geometry and less air flow is usually 60 hp.
