we bought this d17 gas for the loader and now my wife and i cant decide whether we should fix this tractor and sell it or just sell it needin work. it was smoking so i pulled the valve cover and found the stem seals no longer sealing so i replaced them. so far its still smoking but it hasnt ran long enough to burn out years of accumulated oil. it is bleeding oil from the front corner of the oil pan near the power steering unit. (not sure if its oil pan or front cover gasket). it is missing a few bolt up front also. it has a problem in the hand clutch, seems to be stuck in hi. the handle moves but doesnt  go to nuetral or low. tires are bad- fronts are car snow tires and rears arent even the same size. i have put some work into it already, valve stem seals, cap rotor points condensor plugs and wires, single wire alternator and some other stuff.

anyone have any oppinions of what they would do with it? in can do all the work myself but i dont know if it will be a money losing encounter.

any oppinions what its worth fixed or not?
 thanks

hard to make money on an old tractor... esp one that needs more than a paint job.

When I got my D14, the power director didn't shift. Found that the yoke inside the power director casing had a tapered bolt which had come loose. You might look at that.

Elalr,

1st of all, we need to know what series it is?
The series I, II, or III all run about the same for money, the Series IV on the other hand are worth more, both as a scrap tractor, or a clean good runner.

Here is a rule of thumb I use for the Series I-III, for a non running loose tractor, about $1100-$1200 depending on tin work, in your neck of the woods.  Since yours runs, but has power director troubles, I don't think I would go much higher.  Those tractors in top shape, with decent paint bring in the upper 3K range, in their average work clothes, runs, some dings and bends here and there more like mid to upper 2K range, maybe some will get into the 3Ks.  Adding a loader depends on how it is powered, if it is off the front engine driven pump, and the entire loader is full hydraulic, then add a grand, if it is run off the tractor hydro or it is a trip bucket, you might add $250, and that's about it.

The series IV, in top shape will bring pretty good money, upper 4K range in your area.  I have never really seen a slightly beat up Series IV sell, but I would guess mid 3K.  Add a good loader to this tractor, which almost all are full hydraulic on this tractor, and you could see yourself in the 6K, in top shape.

Just some ideas.

As for advise, it is hard to give you that, what do you need or want it for.  If you need a good general purpose tractor, then you have one with good bones, and you might be into it for another $500 in parts, if you do all the work yourself, and then you are set, if you don't really need this tractor, and you are looking to make money, don't!  Sell it and get out from under it, or part it out.  The tractor like that is worth far more in parts than running, if it is a series I-III.

Just my $0.02
