Anybody have a past post on how you tell the what your tractor is if the serial # is in between the WD or the WD45. The Ser # is 156,000 something. Does the 45 back up faster?

The last WD was serial number 146606. The first WD45 was 146607. Your tractor is a 1953. WD has a 2 mph reverse, WD45 has a 3.25 mph reverse.

WD-45 production began at 146607 in 1953. You have a WD45.
I don't know about differences in reverse, someone else will know. I don't know why the serial numbers overlap on the reference page but, if you look down below that chart it tells you the break in the serial numbers. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 04 Jan 2012 at 7:50pm |

Straight stick WD's are 2 mph reverse.......late model bent stick WD's and all WD45's are the faster reverse (3 1/4 mph) and faster 4th gear(12 mph) and slower 1st gear (2 1/3 mph).

The WD manual shows a higher speed for "Fourth" in the "second type" transmission; 10-3/4 vs 9. However, I don't believe the rear axle ratios were different, so I assume the faster 4th gear must be attributable to larger tires or, am I wrong in assuming that 4th is "direct" in both trannys..

Higher engine RPM would also make a difference.

I thought about that too, but, all my manuals from the early WD to the WD-45 show the same Governed engine speed of 1,400 RPM and "high idle" speed at 1677-1722 RPM.

WD45 is geared higher in 4th because of higher rearend.

That must be the answer.
Altho the pinion gear is on the main shaft and might be considered part of the transmission, I would consider the ring gear a part of the differential.

The point was, the trans mainshaft (pinion) doesn't interchange between the two transmissions, so the speeds are tied to which transmission it is.

OK....I admit having never been into either tranny.
Both the WD and WD-45 have 43 tooth ring gears, how many teeth on the WD pinion vs the WD-45 and what is the effective ratio of each?

And which WD is this for(straight shifter or curved)? It has to be for the curved shifter WD's. The late WD had the same tranny as the 45. If the ring gear had different numbers of teeth, I believe the pinion would have different numbers as well.

Actually, the early WD ring gear and the late WD/WD-45 ring gears both have 43 teeth.
However, they have different part numbers.
So........I think, as Doc says, the ratios must be different between the early WDs and the late WD/WD-45s.
Therefor, there must be a higher tooth count on the pinion gear for the late WD/WD-45 than the early WD which would account for that different ratio.
I know I have an early WD pinion gear lying around here somewhere so I could count the teeth on it.
I was hoping Doc could give me the tooth count on the late WD/WD-45 pinion just for my edification and for notation in my parts manual.
I have made notes in both my repair manuals and parts manuals of information I've gleaned from people on this site.
I'm getting old(er) now and may not be able to use all this valuable info but maybe whoever winds up with all my "stuff" will make good use of it! LOL

The ring and pinion for late WD's and all WD45 gassers must be 13 teeth pinion and 43 teeth ring gear which is 3.3 to 1 according to my service book. Then, an older WD must be 12 teeth to 43 teeth which is 3.5 to 1. The only info the service book gives is 3.5 to 1 and 3.3 to 1, no actual gear tooth count. A WD45 diesel and any D17 is 9 tooth pinion to 35 tooth ring gear for 3.9 to 1 ratio.

I know I have a 1950 WD and there are times I wish I had a slower 1st gear..thanks for sharing all this stuff.
