&#$#%! thing is stuck. I have all the bolts out but the sucker won't budge. Maybe I am using kids gloves on it but I have tapped all around it with a wood block and hammer and still no joy.
What is the secret?

There are bolts on the top left holding on another part, can't remember what it was, water jacket? They need to come out as well. Been there!

Make sure you have all 15 (I believe) nuts removed, sometimes they like to get rusted along the head studs, put some penetrating oil along them, Also can use a putty knife and pound in along the head gasket area

Like John and Matt said remove all the bolts and nuts off, there are four on the top left side and three 3/8" nuts on the top right side too.
I drive a putty knife through the center of the old head gasket and have used a chain on top of head and put some lite pressure on the head too.

I've done what Don suggests, too....but have used a chisel and a 2# hammer. Alternate side to side, front to rear.
(it does make a small mark or ding at the edges, but nothing serious)
Good heavy whacks, with some pull from above with a hoist or similar, it should pop loose.

I use Don's method but with old screwdriver (sharpened) like said make sure you are in middle of gasket, someone may hay "glued" it on!

Take the studs out where the thermostat housing is. I had to heat the head to get those out. When I screwed the last one out the head came up with it.

Put spark plugs in and crank engine. Use compression to break it loose.
