Anyone here deal with that guy from Bad Axe Michigan? I'm considering buying some parts even though its a 10 hour drive each way. Is he decent to deal with other than dismantling alot of old iron? Its an engine and I can't imagine shipping if he'd even ship it. Anyone near there that could pick it up possibly? Just looking at my options. Thanks guys.

That sounds like Marty Prill. You might want to check the buyer/seller feedback page on www.ytmag.com. Last I looked there were some "mixed" reviews...

Wow there is some nasty stuff written about him over there....kinda funny they're all Farmall guys though. He has a Gleaner E engine for 77 bucks right now....I'm looking 300 in fuel and 20hrs drive time. If it stays cheap it may be worth it but I imagine it will go up near the end. But figured I'd do my homework just in case.....

I've bought parts from him on e-bay and had good luck. Sometimes truck freight is the way to go. I had a full set of steel wheels shipped from South Carolina for under $250. If it fits on a 4'X4' pallet and is under 500 pounds it can be fairly reasonable. Mine was a dock to dock ship, not to a residence.

It says no shipping on this ad so I figured that was out. Thats why I was curious if anyone was up that way and could pick it up if I purchased it and then I'd get it from them.

I just bought a PTO shaft from him on Ebay. The description said "good part in usable condition". When I received it it was bent. He refunded my money. I wish it would have been a good part, but he made it right.

Judging by some of the reviews, if I were going I'd allow an extra day to be safe and expect the engine to need overhauled. I've never bought anything from him, but the reviews would definitely concern me.

Thats what I'm worried about....I dont want to waste 300 bucks in fuel and the price of the engine for a maybe....I have two 226's that are rebuildable now and the one has a D17 kit in it so its dumb to buy an engine that needs rebuilt lol

I've bought some 7000 series parts from him before, he combined the shipping, helps to cheapen parts up. My friend bougth a 4010 take-out engine, drove the 700 plus miles to pick it up , resealed it and installed it, turned out ok. I also did purchase a used ampmeter for a d-17 turned out to be a pos , he said he would refund , never did see the credit., Mike

I have bought quite a bit of stuff off him.

He can be a crotchety guy, he does not take a lot of pains to babysit buyers. You got to know what you want and take it from there. He is not going to help you, but will sell and hold up his end of the deal. Do not expect any extra effort from him and you will probably not be disappointed. I have got some pretty neat stuff from him, because I'm sure others did not want to put up with his demeanor.

He is not big on answering questions about his stuff, you got to judge by the picture and go from there.

Just another one of the characters you come across in this hobby.

Benny,

I have delt with the guy before I purchased, needless to say I did not purchase.

His emails were rude and he did not answer questions I asked.  Told me to "Read the D@M listing, well I read it again, and he was wrong, the answers weren't there, then he just ignored me.

I don't know how the parts arive, I didn't buy, but buyer beware.

You might try Bill Deppe in Maquoketa Ia or Larry Swenson. Larry has a family member in Ill (Andrew?) that I'm pretty sure makes the trip to Larry's place in Mn for the Holidays. I got a belt pulley delivered very reasonable by him. There wouldn't be any question about the condition of anything from either Bill or Larry. You might also check Colfax Tractor Parts. If they have anything let me know. They're only 8 miles away and I'd be willing to check it out for you.

I have bought parts from him several times, and most of the time have made the trip to pick them up, I've never had any problems with him. The last time, I bought some D-17 sheet metal from him just a few weeks ago, and he offered to meet me half way as he was coming this way. He may come across as rather indifferent and crotchety, but he is a busy guy and sells old parts, he just doesn't have time to discuss every part he sells. To sum it up, I've had much worse experience with a particular AGCO dealer  held in high esteem on this sight, Marty is a good guy, not a Larry Swenson, but none the less, honest.

I bought a number of D19D parts from him a few years ago and they were as stated. No, he does not give much for detail and does not like to answer questions. Just pulls them in and strips em down; you will likely get oil and grease along with your parts as some of mine were pretty messy.

Would I buy from him again?
Yes

I bought a couple of things from him a year back.  He botched the shipping ( I intended to pick it up as I had a trip planned to Steiner in MI and it was kind of on the way).  Ended up costing me 65 for shipping and 70 to clear customs.  He made it right, but it took a bit of effort on my part.   It all stemmed from poor communication, but I understand he probably gets 150 emails a day about this stuff.

Long story short, I'd give him another chance.

Glenn pegged it. THE guy has been on e-bay for quite some time and sells a lot of stuff. If you realize the stuff is 70 years old, and know what your doing, you will do o.k. If your expecting a baby setter and new parts, you wont get it.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I let the engine go....I didnt see it being worth the time or money with the reviews I've recieved. Thanks for the input. I think I'll just spend the money and make a good engine out of the two 226's I have already.

I disagree, I asked a simple question about combining shipping, and basically got yelled at via email, was told to "read the #*$%($#%)(* listing, it was on there"  Went back and read it again, to make sure I was at fault, I wasn't the listing didn't say anything about combining shipping anywhere.  They guy is never going to see my money.  I wan't asking for a new part with no greese, I wasn't asking a detailed technical question about some obscure thing, just a standard question.  I even told him I wanted to purchase 10 or 12 of his parts I think it was.

I had concerns, but I took a chance and bought a pair of B spindles from him last week. From the pic they looked pretty good. I won the auction at $41/pr, sent a MO, and he shipped them immediately. When I  got them they were as nice a pair of spindles as I've seen, no wear on the bushing surface area. I left positive feedback, he did the same, and it was a great transaction. I'd buy from him again.

I did take a chance in large part on your post, in that your opinion on these things is pretty much rock solid. I really wanted to share honest positive feedback on the guy from my transaction because he earned it.

Larry, I do not buy anywhere near what I used to.... That is mainly because eBay has got so dang difficult to navigate that it takes too much time to find stuff.... Glad I was good for something though!  LOL
