I have been looking at two different pistons that is in a couple of engines that I have tore down. Some are a flat top and then some are a dished piston. Both are 4" pistons. What was the difference between the two? I assume that the flat tops are a higher compression piston? Dave.

It would depend on the centerline of the piston wrist pin to the top of the piston along with the first compression ring placement as to which would make the most compression . In other words the one that takes up the most space with the first compression ring the highest in the bore at tdc usually makes the most.

You need to consider weight, too.  At the very least you want two pistons of equal weight rotating 180 degrees from each other.

 I don't think Dave was considering mixing. I believe he is trying to decide which set to use.
 I would think the dished pistons might be the power crater piston and would not have good compression in a 4 inch stroke. Like Mitch said though, it would depend on the location of the wrist pin bore as to the compression ratio.

I looked them over again and the dish pistons are cast Iron.
