My grandfather's old AC planter has a hitch I've never seen before. Does this look original to an AC planter? I think maybe it was a 4 row that was converted to a 2 row. He had both a B and a WD in case it matters. Here's the hitch...
Here's the planter...

Yes, that is the original "pin hitch" for the WD. It was a precursor to the Snap Couple hitch that came out with the WD45's. My 1951 CA has the same pin hitch but Dad always used a 999 Deere with the tongue cut off.

Thanks CTucker. What's the reason for the duck-bill looking part of the hitch? And how did it fasten to the tractor?

That guides it into where the pin goes. Simply adjust the height to where its close and back in.

Under the middle of the tractor is a casting with 2 "ears" that hang down and have a pin through them. The bill fits between the ears and helps line things up. You remove the pin from the tractor, back up and line up the plow, and slide the pin through the plow hitch, connect your lift arms and got turn some dirt. It helps greatly to have a second set of eyes when lining up and that's why the Snap couple came into being.

Would anyone be interested in trading a SC eye for the hitch shown above? I'm hoping to restore this planter to work with my SC CA.

Murph, if you want to convert it you will most likely need the whole hitch, because on the planter it is not just an eye to bolt onto it.

Thanks Rich. Do you mean there's more in the area of the eye, or are you meaning the lift arms?

You can remove the 2 bolts and bolt an eye on for the SC setup. However if you do that, you should also change the bolt on lift arms to something that will connect to your spring loaded lift latches or you could get a headache if the SC bell lets go and the lift arms don't.

hahahahah yeh right. Trade an SC for a pin hitch. I personally like and preffer the pin hitch but I'm one out a 1000. Plus the fact that the SC hitch has value and the pin hitch is worthless. The latches alone bring 200.00 by themselves for a good useable set. |

You will need to burn another hole in the hitch to put a snap coupler eye on. It won't line up since the mount bolts have a differant spacing. it will also move the planter back about 2". should not be a problem with a planter but makes a huge differance on a plow.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've seen the photos of what happens when the SC eye comes loose but not the latches. This would mainly be for show, so that's not really a concern. I have the complete SC setup on my CA, I would only need an eye for the planter.

A green collector neighbor just showed me a junk SC plow the other day. He said it's for sale If I wanted anything off of it. I plan on getting the one coulter that is left, I could probably get the eye off the hitch too. I don't know what it would cost to ship but I'll get the parts off of it and see.

The snap coupler bell wears where it hits the bottom frame of it's hitch point. Lay under the tractor and push the back of the bell (the open end) upward as far as it will go, while watching the latch in the middle. If the latch stops before the bell and appears to start to unlatch, you will need to remove the bell and build up the worn areas of the bell with weld. That, and a good latch spring, make it safe again. It wears on a 55 year old tractor like anything else of that age.

What I was trying to say is that the snapcoupler hitch which is the right length is, was made in one piece with no holes, and you take the whole hitch assembly off the planter and install the snap coupler one which has an eye that resembles a U shape that stradles the front of the hitch and is welded solid. Unless of course you want to cobble it up as many have in the past and many will in the future, just my 2 cents.

I have a one piece corn planter Snap Couple drawbar. However, shipping to NC might be cost prohibitive. If a bolt on piece worked OK for a plow, I would think it would for a planter and would be much easier to ship. At a show this might only upset a few "correct police" if they took the time to bend over and look at the set-up. JMO Charlie

Thanks for all the info guys. And thanks for the offer Charlie. I actually bought a SC eye from another forum member this week, so I'll be able to 'cobble' it together... the correct police don't scare me.

Any chance anyone else has an eye for a snap coupler? I just bought a 2 row planter and where the eye is for a snap coupler, there is a spring loaded spring going through 2 arms coming up from the unit. Thank you

I'm sure you can find someone that would sell an SC eye. You might want to start a new thread in the classified section with your wanted item in the subject line. Also, I'd love to see photos of the hitch your planter came with.

I'd just use the hitch that's on the planter. Here's a pic of the planter book.

If it were mine, I would use it the way it is by bolting to your SC drawbar or buy another SC drawbar and mount it on the planter so it will still be original. These planters, set up for the WD are few and far between. I certainly wouldn't cut on anything when it would be so easy to use it the way it is. You probably have to remove the PTO to use this planter also. |

That makes sense, thank you. My next question would be if anyone had a draw bar that would work with a D 10?

I have a subsoiler with that type of hitch that I use on my CA. I just remove the snap couple drawbar and insert it in the subsoiler and back into it as you would with any other type of snap couple tool. Not really a need for a second drawbar, it's so easy to switch.
Where are you in Whitehall? I live just outside of Hellertown,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for you help. The 3 point that came with the tractor was not original, and a draw bar did not come with the tractor. I live in Egypt, but the tractor is on our property in Kunkletown. If you wanted to take a look some weekend that'd be great, but next time I go up I could take pictures too of the tractor and post them. Thanks again, Ean. |
