That's not an unreasonable offer for a garden tractor that doesn't run.

Those Simplicity/A-C units were well built and I have no problem getting anything I need from Sandy Lake. I picked up an 816GT (79 model as I recall) about five years ago for 350.00; carb rebuild, new muffler and battery and that 16hp B&S would put some grass through that 48" deck. Had to treat the motor as the rings were likely stuck but she came around after sitting in inside storage for over 15 years. If the 716H does not have grease zirks on the spindle assemblies like the 816GT, you can likely get them from Brenda at Sandy Lake also as I upgraded mine to same last summer.
I also picked up another complete 816GT unit off OK Craig's List (300.00) a few months ago and this one is extremely tight compared to the first one I found. No steering play and sound tranny/diff but the deck has sealed spindles that seem to growl a bit at times.
Motor is tight and power compared to my first unit is very noticable and she fired right off with jumper cables on a very old battery and fresh gas. Warm-up, dropped all fluids and re-filled engine oil and "Seafoamed" both the crankcase/fuel tank and this one has no visible smoke which is rare with the big twin Brigg's of that era. Put an in-lne fuel filter and shut-off valve on it if you buy it as you will be glad you did.
First unit will likely get a Honda re-power, if that old Briggs ever finally gives up.
Second unit will hopefully become a traveller as I will make a small two seat trailer/sulky to pull behind her when I go to shows, taking the deck off for potential spare use someday.
Will also be putting D-Series seats on both at some point.
As long as I can keep an old unit like these running cheaply with good maint. and a few spare parts, I can't bring myself to fork over big bucks for one of the new ones as they just are not built like the older ones.

Well I paid I think $265 for this 716H with "pod" headlights this summer on eBay.  Gave it the same carb cleaning & double Seafoam engine treatment Tim mentioned, fixed/adjusted a few minor items and it runs great.  Will need a new battery for next season and the deck could use a little patching.   Those outside "pod" headlights were at least an option on all these 71x tractors and could be installed later or swapped from a parts tractor.  I have at least a couple spare sets of them from a large batch of used Allis/Simplicity parts I bought someone out for a whole price of $50.   HTH with your valuation...  Mike

P.S.  This tractor is now OFF the front porch at the farm and under the carport behind the 65 Lincoln...
