How do they compare in horsepower and pulling ability? Assuming they are weighted right and in good shape. |

A Super M/Mta is more in the range for hp.

Most M's have the domed high compression pistons and many have the after market governor giving hp pushing 60. These piston kits have been sold by IH for decades. Compare that to Allis who stuck to original equipment sleeves and pistons from Allis for the WD45 until about 10 or 15 years ago. True many 45s have after market sleeves and pistons but in my experience most don't or didn't. Stock to stock IMO the 45 will out horse not only an M but will out perform a Super M but I haven't run into a stock M ever. Heck, even the mechanics at the CaseIH dealer I worked at 10 years ago didn't know an M came standard with 3 7/8" diam pistons originally. Considering all that a 45 will have a workout against 60 hp Ms but still a 45 can do it sometimes. 45s are uncanny at their power.

I can agree with Lonn but the 45 will do the same work as a M on almost half the fuel. I wonder how the two would compare in there diesel versions.

A WD45 has alot of power for its size. Plus the snap coupler and traction booster, which let it pull a 3.14 plow with ease. On the other hand a Farmall Super M was rated at 3.16 "I think" and pulled them nicely. They both are great tractors but depends on what you want to use them for.

45s will pull 4x14 out of the box in many soils. Dad used to pull a 3x16 Oliver pull-type in 3rd gear in black soil. No snap coupler used with the pull-type. Just wheel weights and fluid. Stock for stock a 45 will do everything a SM will do and probably do it better when snap coupler and traction booster is used. My Dad grew up on IH and Case and when he moved to AC he said there was no comparison on the difference when he got his 45. He called it a tiger and sometimes a bucking bronco. Seat might have contributed to that last one but he always said you couldn't stop that tractor. It's the tractor that switch his brand to Allis back in the late 60's.

BTW I'm not saying that the Ms were bad. Obviously they were real good tractors.

If you want to buy one, buy the 45. Orange is always better!
