what is the best or easiest way too remove the front crankshaft seal on the 226 engine without removing the timing cover with the engine still in the tractor? fan belt pully is off.

Frequently I change seals where the shaft is still in place. I find it works well to drill small holes in the seal, thread a long sheet metal screw in the holes, and grip the screw with a pair of side cutters. This works well when you have limited space in front of the shaft. Problem is driving the new seal in. Late model stuff usually has an installer that screws in the end of the shaft. You're going to need space for a hammer and driver. I would say either pull the cover off the engine, or remove the front bolster.

Go to your local fru-frooo hobby-type store, and find a 'latchhook' tool.  Take the little flippy-thing off (just the hook on a handle), drill and grab the holes with that... couple'a tugs and it'll come out.

Seals wear out but often go bad for other reasons.  A groove in the crankshaft could  cause leakage and would need a speedy sleeve to repair. The front cover may not be lined up with the crankshaft. That is normally done with a slip fit bushing that slides over the crank and into the seal bore.
