I have 2 AC185's.I have allways wanted a 170.There is a later model 170 about 50 miles from me at a AC dealer.Very good shape.Complete overhaul..clutch,engine,injector pump for $7500.I am thinking about trading one of my 185's in on the 170.To me they look more compact to get around with an 8 ft. shredder. My 185 runs good but not as clean as the 170.Would I be making a mistake? Is there that much difference in physical size?BStone

The 170 is ad D-17 IV with new sheet metal and wiring. They are very popular tractors. The diesels have nice Perkins engine in them. The diesel 170's are more desirable than the 185's. They would be more fuel efficient than the 185. I don't know if they could handle and 8' shredder though.

If it's a diesel, it would have a 236 Perkins in it. Not as smooth as a 6 cylinder 301, but a good and efficient engine overall. At 63 hp, I don't know if it would have all the power you would need. That's why the 175s got the 248 with a bit more power. My 175 is basically the same tractor, and while it has some good features, I'm not too crazy about the ergonomics. You sit low in the operators station, so your forward sightlines are obscured by the big sheet metal. The tall fenders around you also amplify the noise around you. However, I have never been on a 185, so I don't know if it is any different. I find the high seating position of a 190 to be far superior in both cases. My 2 cents. |

I prefer the 175D over the 185 because of the Perkins engine and the mechanical power director. I run a JD MX8 rotary mower with my 175D and it handles it well. The 170D will be a few less horses (136 Vs 148 CI) but with a fresh OH should handle an 8' mower.

We have a 175 and its been very tuff and reliable. We pulled a 10' Rhino mower and it handled it fine unless it was real tuff thick grass and weeds. Also here where we have steep hills and banks the low seat arrangement is quite nice.

I run a 7' on my d17 with no problems. A 170/175 should have no issues with a 8'.
