Dr Allis or any other 226 pullers. What is the max rpm I should set these motors at. I have one 226 with a 4 1/8 over bore kit, and a cam with .100 more lift. It has 170 psi cranking pressure, and the high speed jet drilled out. The other 226 has the over bore kit with flat top pistons, and one of Barneys cams, carb jet drilled, and 180 psi cranking pressure. We have no rules yet on max rpm.

The next thing to consider is the flywheel. I wouldn't spin  any stock flywheel  more than 20% over.

We ran our D17 with 390 cube and high compression at 2400.

I finally got it to 2100 rpm. The manual says 1950 to 2000 high idle. Will see how she pulls fri night.

I run a 226  at 3000 RPM, I just lightened the governer weights a fair bit.  The engine has stock rods, crank etc but was balanced.  The pistons are M&W pistons from a WD (taller compression height) that I trimmed a bit off the top, to get a .010 popout above the block deck, cut out the bowls and cut valve reliefs in.  Final compression ratio is 11.25 to 1, and it's about 230 PSI cranking if I rember correctly.  I had a cam ground to my specs and did a fair bit of head and manifold work, a Minne Mo G type carb with a 1.062 venturi in it and some work done.
 
It's nothing to special, but I just wanted to put togather a pretty cheap engine for some "stock" type pulling.  I'm not going to spin an old cast flywheel to hard and by 3000 RPM those old heavy pistons are plenty for the rods to hang on to.

if you run the series 1 d17 style oil pump . turn it as many rpms as the carb will let you provided the valves don't float from weak valve springs.
