2800 injector/engine timing

I have a 190 XT with 2800 diesel. The injector pump was take out to be rebuilt, but the timing marks and engine timing marks were not lined up. I can't find any timing marks on the gear the injector gear lines up with. I need some advice on how to get everything lined back up and get it running again.

Have you pulled the pump drive shaft gear forward enough to uncouple it from the idler gear?? so you don't know which teeth were lined up with each other??

Yes, it's pulled out now, but i don't know where the mark was lined up when it was pulled out.

I have the #1 piston at top dead center now. We took the valve cover off and injector out. We put a screwdriver in the cylinder and turned the engine by hand until it was all the way up in the compression stroke with both valves closed.

You've certainly made this way more difficult that it needs to be. What should have been done is put a scribe mark on the pump mounting flange and engine mtg plate so you know exactly where the pump was. Remove the pump, taking note of the driveshaft end and the "dot" on one side of the drive tang. After repairs were made, reinstall the pump making sure the pump is rotated so the "dot" on the shaft is in-line with the "dot" inside the pump. Align your own scribe marks and you are good to go. Now, you need to remove the shaft from the gear in a press. Install the shaft inside the pump (pay attention to the "dots") and rotate the shaft until the timing marks align inside the little retangular window on the side of the pump. Install the pump on the engine minus the gear and leave the mtg nuts just snug so you can rotate the pump body back and forth. If you really are at TDC, back the engine up to 40 degrees BTDC. Call your pump shop and give him every number off of your pump tag (DBGFC627########) and he should be able to tell you what the static timing setting is. It will be somewhere from 18 degrees BTDC to 28 degrees BTDC depending on exactly WHICH pump it is. Position the crank pulley at the proper degrees and then slide the gear onto the shaft (easier said than done) and make sure you have pump marks in time and crank pulley degrees correct before you tighten the driveshaft nut !!!!!!!! Be careful installing the shaft into the pump so you don't roll or cut the umbrella seals. Tighten the pump mtg nuts after making sure the pump is rotated/timed to the correct spot before starting.

Thanks for your help. yes I'd just got into a big hurry taking the pump out and didn't mark anything. I have a friend who is a mechanic for the county trucks who is going to help me clean up my mess. Thanks again.
