ok so in theory should i be able to pull the whole hand brake out of my WC if i get the cotter pin on the outside out then tap it with a hammer? i really need to get it done.... just curious. any experience taking it apart?

The shaft that the cotter pin is in needs to come all the way out of the housing so the band can come out. Of course you first have to remove the spring and adjusting nut and push the bolt out of the toggle.

Did both sides last year, and by tap, yes, SEVERAL, WITH A THREE POUND HAMMER! That removes the handle, as for the rest of it, The I & T manual explains it pretty well, just be sure to mark the plate and housing with a chisel, it will save you lots of frustration later. Also, do one side at a time.
