ALLIS CHALMERS CA?

I had a real nice '55 couple of years ago.Good on power, better than the 'off colour 2n ' I had.I like the 4 speed.Hand clutch,some work some don't, mine did fine.Probably a '2 bottom plow' tractor powerwise.Bit of a challenge to climb on and off,course that might be my old tired bones ! I paid $1500 for mine,all original, was 6 volt,had PTO pulley. Needed serious cleaning(only) of the hydraulic pump,ran fine afterwards.More power than a B and a 4 gear making it more useful for all around work.

I have one that has been converted to snap coupler. I would say around here $1500 would buy one that is in dire need of some TLC. $2000-$2500 would get one in good condition. I agree with Jay. The N series Fords WISHED they were as good a tractor as the CA...

My buddy brought a wide front CA home from Montana with an Allis Belly Sickle and the wide front thats on my WD45....that little CA is super handy and a powerhouse.....just think, a Farmall Cub is 9.5 HP, a CA is 26 and they are very close in size.....

My son has two Ca that he is going to post for sale this weekend as a pair one with a loader , both tricycle fronts in Michigan . keep a look out for them .

The CA is the winter project in the shop now. I wish the green grass was outside now instead of the snow. Have a good one BILL P

The CA is the "Little Allis with the big Allis features"; 4 spd tranny, "live" hyd and PTO (with the hand clutch), PAW rear wheels, "traction booster", and same hydraulics as the WD/WD45. They are a honest 2 bottom plow machine; and properly setup for plowing (weights on rear tires, engine weights, and plow/tires adjusted), can pull a 2X14 plow in third gear. They use approx 1 gallon of fuel/hour when working pretty hard, less for raking and lawn mowing.

A foot step can be added to the left brace fairly easily (there is an ad on this forum for a nice one). With the platform over the axles, they can be accessed rather easily with the step.

Parts are fairly easy to obtain, so rehabbing a tired one is not too much of a hassle. However, one should plan on spending $1,000-$2,000 for a decent rehab job; more if you need to get into the engine.

In my opinion, it is much more verstile than the Ford and Farmall and are less expensive

than the Fords. Currently have a CA in the shop being rehabbed to replace the one I have been using for lawnmowing.

Two of the several CA's I have rehabbed and are now with new owners.

Temp has always been in the normal range no matter what it was doing. My "CA" only has a 1/16 over bore kit in it. The engine runs at stock RPMs. The only thing I have added is weight. You need weight for traction, so I have 1 set of inner & outer front & rear weights. If I ever wanted to replace the "CA" I would look for a "D-14", but I have no need to.

You know how I feel about my CA. It is a little awkward getting on and off but I just get on and off the back. Never tried the front before.

I just obtained a CA. I cannot seem to figure out what year it is. I know the serial number, it is CA 635. I know it has to be between 50 - 53 because it has the pin style receiver.

Thank you for the fast reply. I've seen the serial number chart you have posted. Because I have never restored tractors I am truly uncertain of the serial number. So, is my tractor a 1951 based on the starting numbers for 1951 and 1952?

Narrow front now but have everything to change over to a wide w/ trip loader bucket soon and from pulling a 6' BH to drilling fence posts(10") auger, really can find anything it complains about doing( lots of power to size ratio and like all has said very handy tractor- especially when ya buy em cheap,($400) mine needed new rear rims and front rims but motor is strong through all the paces I've put it through so far...

Yes you can. The lift arms are different and would have to be either changed, or cut off to fit the proper lift latches.
