Hello everyone, I’m obviously new to this forum. I have a D17 that belongs to my father in law with a loud knock in the lower engine I’m trying to bring back to life.

My main question today is trying to figure out when it was manufactured. We’ve always thought it is a series 4 since that’s what the fuel tank says on the decals. After closer inspection, the left side has all white letters on the engine cover. The right side and fuel tank has black lettering. We found the serial number which is D17 28903. According to google that is a series 1. How can I confirm it really is a series 1? Obviously one or more of the body parts have been replaced at some point in its life.

A legit series 4 has a bank of hydraulic levers to the right of the seat. It also has two external lift arm cylinders about 3 inches in diameter. No other D-17 series has these features. Yours has two levers on the left side of the steering wheel, correct ?? That makes it to not be a series 4.  S/n 28903 stamped on the left side of the clutch bell housing makes it a very early 1960 year and a series one. Engine knocking problems and repair parts are pretty much the same thru all ages of D-17's and I assume it is a gas NOT a diesel ??

A lot of people put series 4 decals on tractors that are not series 4.  True series 4 tractors have a side mounted hydraulic pump (below the fuel tank).  Earlier series did not.  No major changes in the engines throughout the D17 production run though.

Early production D17s used the low pressure, WD style oiling system. I don't remember what year the full flow system was introduced. 1960 maybe???

Memory tells me the full-flow oiling system began at chassis s/n 24001 which is late 1959.   Dseries4, that is a gorgeous D-17 IV  !!!!
