I needed to replace my fan belt so I pulled the tractor in the shop.  I disconnected the chain coupler and noticed that the sprocket was loose on the pump input shaft and both were worn pretty badly.

I have ordered a new pump shaft and sprocket from agco but I remember reading about someone using a different coupler a while back.  does anyone have recommendations of a better set up?

also, the pump seal kits are $100 each and there are 6 of them between the sections.  The shop foreman told me if it wasn't leaking, i could probably get by without replacing them.  I'm curious if anyone has experience with this.

thanks in advance.  Derek

If the pumps (3) aren't leaking and working OK, I wouldn't spend a dime trying to fix something that isn't broken. It takes three seal kits, not six.

Dr,  The sprocket was very loose on the shaft.  the keyway and key had worn and rolled.  I'm surprised it hadn't spun on the shaft yet and the shaft was worn down.  I'm afraid if i try to put a new sprocket on the old shaft its going to be severely out of round and fail quickly.

Well then, before you rip apart the pump to replace the shaft, you'd better have a new shaft in your hands.

In order for the replacement parts to last, they must be properly aligned during installation!  To do this,  install and tighten the new crank drive end and also the chain coupler, then make sure that the shaft on the chain coupler end has EQUAL amount of free play to each side of the crank coupler!   If not, remove parts and file or grind the mounting ears to get the needed free play to each side and up and down, then assemble and check, redo if needed.
If done properly, the drive will be good for many years(30 years on our AC15D).
If not done, only 1 or 2 years!
Parts also available  from McMaster Carr!

I had a 175 gas one time that wasn't aligned well at all. I finally positioned the front support in the best spot possible and drilled/tapped 1/4" grade 8 bolts thru the side frames and into the front support to insure accurate and consistent alignment of the drive shaft. The holes in the side frames and front support are too oversized for good and consistent positioning.
